Gareth Bale has just signed for Real Madrid for over $130 million. As a 12 year old he ran a 2:24 800 and a 4:59 1500. Should he have stuck to running?

And if he stuck to running, he have a $130 million contract? Don't think so. Good for Gareth. Get some!
Gareth bale is very fast (as a midfielder) and is also a very good footballer.
Given a chance, he will break away from the defenders very easily given his speed.
As for sticking to track, that's a joke.
The man is earning £300,000 per week- something that runners wouldn't even imagine.
Even if Usain Bolt ran 9.28 and 18.99, he wouldn't even come close to what this guy is earning.
Only the maestro, Leo Messi, earns more than this guy. With the endorsements coming his way, he will make a lot of money.
Finally, Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester City have ruined football. Paying such huge sums of money to acquire players just to win titles is insane.
Bale is not making the $130 Million (really €100 million which is slightly more than $130 Million)
That is the transfer fee that Real Madrid had to pay to Tottenham to acquire his rights. In addition, to this payment, Real Madrid has to pay Bale his salary which I have not been able to find - but is not the $130 Million
This should be inspiration to any young runners. It shows that if they don't quite reach the top in the sport they most love (running) then they can have success in less popular ones like soccer.
although these are the official stats I aso read somewhere that later on he did a 1500 in 4.07 although that isn't mentioned in powerof10

Soccer is much more popular on the world stage than track.
I think that's proven with a transfer fee of a $130 million.

Is he making $130 million per year or over several years? How much does Bolt make per year?
He makes 'only' £300,000 per week, the $130m was a transfer fee paid by one club to another.
If he ran a 4:07 - I would be very suprised if he did.. He would have been a decent track runner but still not close to 300k per week. You have to very talented or well conditioned to run a 4:07 at any age

$300,000 is like 15 million per year? How much does Bolt make per year?

Yup. It is,just, the transfer fee. I think he was just one year into his ( I believe) four year contract with Tottenham Hotspurs.
As I understand, Real Madrid ( which inexplicably spends like a drunken sailor) offered the figure ($130m) to basically ward off any potential threat from the competition and the Spurs welcomed it with both arms.
It is crazy though how Real Madrid does business. Today, they sold Kaka of Brazil back to Milan for a pittance despite having bought him for 56 million four years ago.

inspired, you got to keep it simpler. Remember, you're talking to soccer fans.
I had the pleasure of witnessing a few trainig sessions with Bale over the past couple of years, and as a former college coach, I think this guy could have been world class over the the 800m/1500m, but then again, I am glad he didn't pursue it due to what everyone is stating: there is no way he would be pulling in the $450,000 USD/week he earns with Real Madrid.

Not a great comparison. I think he was last estimated by Forbes to make around $20-25mm. Highly doubtful this guy, even setting WRs in the 800/1500, would make half as much as Bolt, obviously.

Would you take this soccer offer if you knew you could be the best (pick your track event) in the world. I would. Top soccer players lead great lives.

Bolt made $20 million last year, which is apparently more than this guy. But Bolt is the only one in track making that kind of money.
Unless Gareth Bale is 9.57 fast....
How fast is 2:24 for a 12 year old? I think I could have run that time myself, were I not a couch potato at that age.
The $450,000 a week is only his salary from Madrid. Including his deals with Adidas, Lucozade etc I would expect him to earn quite a bit more.
