So my dog is 13 years old and has a few tumors. He was given ~6 months to live about 2 years ago and is still going pretty strong. He was never allowed to sleep on the furniture, but now that he's dying, I give him a pass. Anyway, I've noticed this weird behavior from him. He lies down on the couch and licks it for periods of time as long as 10 minutes. At first I thought he was licking his paws or something, but that's not the case.
Is there a reason he licks the couch? Could this be caused by his illness? One other thing to note: he was diagnosed with a calcium deficiency about 5 years ago because his body couldn't naturally absorb vitamin D anymore. So now he has a prescription and he eats tums everyday. Could the couch licking have something to do with the calcium deficiency? Maybe a sign that he needs more or something?
If anyone here has any reasonable explanation, I'd be curious to know. I'm not really concerned enough about this issue to bother the vet with this particular question, though.
