He was not far from that shape before. When he ran 59:43, it was on a rainy day, alone, on a hilly course. Compared to the flat, dry, bubble-like, paced races with lots of competition in Den Haag or Amsterdam, he had to have been in 59-low shape.
Whether he gets back there depends on his health. His injuries always seem to flare up when he does speedwork. That's why he's doing almost no speed this season, just tons of mileage. 59:00 will require lots of speed.
Not a chance. He couldn't have run 59:00 ever and never will. His 59:43 was with great weather and with a tail-wind, just like his Boston performance.
Both Hall's marathon and half marathon PRs were wind-aided flukes and don't represent his true fitness level at any point in his career. Sorry to say it, but in reality, Hall was a 2:06-2:07 marathoner at his peak, which has already long passed.
God, he is skinny these days. Compare him to this clip from 2009 http://youtu.be/5np0CEMjFp8
a bit, but it makes a huge difference he's tan and has light in front of him, compared to behind in the 2009 video

Yesterday i randomly clicked through the gallery of his 59:43 half and i immediately thought the same. He seemed a lot bulkier in the past. Same with Webb of course.
Seems like they are trying to be someone they cant be - an african.
Makes me wonder if this low carb, low fat, all healthy and kinda restricting diet is that useful at all. Im sure he still does some strength work but when seeing pics of some elites dinner plates on twitter i always think 'wait...they are running 100+mpw and THATS all they eat for dinner?'
Look at Solinsky, he is/was huge, sure also a lot more muscle but even at his peak not as low-fat as Ryan Hall and the 3-5% bodyfat guys.
No way
Yeah, I've heard from quite a few elite runners that they have tried to stay below 5% body fat, but recovery is just not as good as when you have more fat.
As you say, it's just not possible for a white guy to look like Asbel Kiprop.
good move looking at the half. if you can't run a good half, then you can't run a good marathon. i'd have every marathoner run a good half before going on to a major marathon. get the good half, then go onto the marathon. bad half? means you take a light workout period of a few weeks or so, then build back up and attack the half again.
I am sure he would like to run a 59:00 half. Just like he wanted to break 4 in the mile.
Hardloper is using an email that hints at him being Alberto @ nikeoregonproject.com...is that real or is he violating the terms of use by impersonating someone?
If Mr. Salazar is now openly posting I will be a happy camper indeed.
I watched the clip and don't think Hall himself believed anything he was saying. This was nothing more than an advertisement commercial, and his capitalizing on his brand name in the absence of solid performances. For the jogger who sees Ryan Hall talking about smashing his American record with the new "Pace Band", it gives them the idea that they can be just like Hall. Media is more powerful than folks think.
Ya I think this is a joke. Ryan always talks big and then does nothing. He can talk about running 59:00 all he wants, just like he talks about winning a major or winning the Olympics. The truth of the matter is that he isn't gonna come close to 60:00 until he gets back on the track and gets his 5k down to 13:20 range. Honestly I don't see that happening.
I don't really expect much from him anymore
And I hope to date supermodels in the future. Doesn't mean it will happen.
Noticed the video was posted by Gretchen Fishman. Knew a Gretchen a while back. Good runner, really good racewalker, couple national teams. Same lady?
I'm hoping to as well. Actually, a 58:00 would be nice to be able to check off my list.

What runners don't realize is that skinnier is not automatically faster. There are lot of examples of fast runners with a bit bigger frame. Case in point, in my box some of the fastest guys are rather BUFF.
And I want a toilet made of solid gold but it's just not in the cards now is it?
I hope to make $775K next year.
