It's definitely Webb. I remember where I was when I heard that Webb had broken Jim Ryun's HSR in the mile, as I'm sure many of you do; sort of like the Kennedy assassination.

I can't believe no one has mentioned this person:
Eddy Lee
We followed his daily training and every race for years, and we didn't stop until he reached his goal. The best part of the Eddy Lee thread was that he DID reach his goal and everyone rejoiced.
I will say that was top to bottom the most positive thread I've seen since I started coming to this site in 2001. Pretty much everybody was rooting for the guy. And yeah, it was pretty awesome when he did it.
This is an easy one, Alan Webb.
"Alan Webb" returns 73422 matches when using the search function.
"Galen Rupp" returns 71969 matches.
Could anyone else match those two?

But there is a HUGE difference in the sentiment toward one versus the sentiment toward the other.

"Notice this is not saying which is our favorite runner its which runner drew our attention the most."
Including the first names seems to skew the results. For just Rupp vs Webb, it's 10 thousand more for Rupp: 68000 something to 58000 something.

I hear you. My comment is more of a reference to the thread title:
"...The one who brings out the fanboy in all of us."
And for this criteria, the difference between these two is enormous.
jason rexing no doubt
There's this guy noone who can supposedly beat bolt. I've seen him get some positive attention on here.
Apparently noone has also seen Rupp go somewhere with a girl, and he is also more of a bad A than Jason Rexing (quite an accomplishment).

I don't know how to decipher this garbled nonsense, except that you said someone other than Alan Webb, so clearly you're wrong...
PS, if it needs any further proof, Alan Webb has been mentioned 55 times in this thread already. No one else is close to that. Rupp has been mentioned like 15 times.
QED
Would appear to be Rupp over Webb as far as references. Took some guesses as to 3rd place: best I've found so far is Ritz with 40,000.

Exactly, these damn kids have no appreciation for legends. This board would have died 10 years ago without Mr Rexing and his trainers.

What on earth are you using to count "references"?
has anybody mentioned Steve jones yet? others pale in the shadow of his greatness!
A few decades too early, but if he was around now, he'd make everyone else look so dull and predictable.
An electric kick, a media bad boy, a WR holder, Olympic Champion and heavily involved in the politics of athletics.
That said, the current hero of the world must be Kawauchi - his 'die before surrender' mentality is both inspirational and ridiculous!

Not too bright, are you?
Well, noone said that life was fair.

It's the number of results you get when you enter a name in the search function for this message board.
The full name Ritzenhein generates another 7000 or so results in addition to the 41000 for Ritz.
Considering the almost six to one relationship between Ritz and the full name Ritzenhein, I find it remarkable that there are almost 9000 results for the full name Prefontaine, about as many as for Ryun. Pre is not searchable because it is too short.
With slight rounding:
Rupp 69000
Webb 59000
Ritz 41000
Ritzenhein 7000
Hasay 13000
Ryun 9000
Prefontaine 9000
Pre ??????
