In 2012 probably the 800 (the Olympic final)
This year? Perhaps the 1500? A hell of a year for the good ol metric mile so far

World men's: 400m
US men's: 1500m
World women's: 800m
US women's: 100m hurdles, 100m
Depends what you mean by 'deepest'
If its in terms of most competitive, where there is many athletes who could potentially win the worlds I'd say women's 15 (and 8 for that matter).
Men: marathon
Men's 400m? Really? There are 2 standout performers and the rest are a country mile behind.
I'd say the 110m Hurdles. The top 10 or so are all pretty closely matched
US men 110H are currently deeper than men's 1500. They could conceivably sweep 1-4 in moscow.

There are about 30 men who could break 45 right now. Depth isn't just top 8.
And the question wasn't who is closely matched or not, the question was depth, which includes historical performances and potential challengers for a WC medal or final.
Yes, the men's 1500 is pretty deep.
You have someone who ran 3:29 and another who ran 3:30 this year form Kenya that didn't even make the Kenyan team.
Farah ran 3:28.
In fact 4 of the 6th fastest men this year won't be running the 1500 at the World Championships.
The US has ten under 3:35.
7 different countries have someone at 3:32 or better, 9 at 3:33.
Last year's Olympics showed that medals could come form anywhere and are hard to predict.
2013 CrossFit Games. Incredible depth.

Also, an incredible inability to read on your part, seeing as the question was 'What is the deepest event in TRACK today'
You're really boring.

I can read. Lately I see more and more Crossfit coverage in the T&F/athletics section of newspapers. I think they see Crossfit slowly replacing "old school" track and field.
The men's 800m when everyone is healthy. London 2012.
This!!

I'm not sure I agree on the 'historical performances' bit. If someone's run 43.5 before, it doesn't really mean much if he's barely beating 45.5 now. Remember, the question was 'deepest ... today' (to me that implies current form only). Only 11 men under 45 this year. IMO it's one of the weaker events currently, in terms of depth.
the Men's 5000 meter is ridiculously deep. Farah is challenged every week by different guys and when he dropped down to the 1500 he blasts the second fastest time of the year in a distance he doesnt even run that often. You have got to be crazy to think the 1500 is deeper than the 5k. Maybe in the United States it is, but no way globally
Not disagreeing with you that the 5000m is deep. But "Farah is challenged every week by different guys"? Bit of an exaggeration, you think? He's only run 2 5000's this year of any real note (discounting Oxy and the 14 min Euro Cup race as he was never going to be seriously challenged in either)
Steeplechase: 70 cm (2.3 ft) deep. Every other event is contested on or above the track surface.

Well he lost at Pre and Birmingham was awful close as well. It's not like these are duals either, the ethiopians and the kenyans are all young, talented and capable of some crazy times. Not to mention that Farah, Gebremeskel, Gebrhiwet, Alamirew, Koech, Soi, even rupp are all capable of closing in around 52.5 off a controlled pace
Has anyone ever run a marathon on the track? I think that would be very deep.
if you guys give me a bit, i'll check 2013 top times for each event and pick a standard in IAAF points to compare.
maybe the equivalent of a 1:45 800m? whatever that works out to be. or should it be tougher? 1:44?
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
Move over Mark Coogan, Rojo and John Kellogg share their 3 favorite mile workouts
Mark Coogan says that if you could only do 3 workouts as a 1500m runner you should do these
Red Bull (who sponsors Mondo) calls Mondo the pole vaulting Usain Bolt. Is that a fair comparison?
