In the words of Michele Ferrari, writing on his own website: http://53x12.com/do/show?page=indepth.view&id=139

A few days ago, in Monte Carlo, another Englishman, Mo Farah, a specialist of the 5000 and 10000 meters, managed to improve the European record of 1500m, which was holding on for 16 years (Cacho, 1997): 3'28 "81, improving by more than 5 seconds his personal best.

Just like Froome, Farah, as well as for the outstanding performances, impresses for the ghastly, unhealthy thinness.
Achieved how...? Only with a particularly strict diet?
This is the question those who care about the physical and mental health of the athletes should try to answer to.

Obviously, Dr. Ferrari has a history, and his expressed concerns for the physical and mental health of athletes seem more than a little hypocritical. Still, he never denied that PEDs exist amongst endurance athletes, unlike another Italian coach who also likes to write on the same subject.

The keyword here is "unhealthy thin".

Yes, he maybe be the fastest in the 5000/10000 but his overall health is rather poor.

"ghastly, unhealthy thinness"

Farah is obviously very thin, but no more so that any of the East African distance runners on the circuit, with the possible exception of K. Bekele. In no way does he look remotely unhealthy, to my mind.

Very thin athletes "on a program" typically exaggerate their weight.

Chris Froome is listed at 71 KG/ 156 LBS. No way.

What's ironic is that being "ghastly thin" is the number one thing Ferrari emphasized to his athletes (Lance, Tyler Hamilton, other top cyclists). Even more than injecting his athletes with EPO and a host of other drugs, he pleaded with his athletes to improve their diets.

Ferrari was also a coaching genius without the drugs, revolutionizing how cyclists train, but that's another story.

If Farah is thin, then what does that make Kiprop?

we've been through this recently. webb is 5'9" 143, just to give you some context of what that looks like on an elite distance runner. farah is 5'9" 126-128.

to be clean and still be the very best at endurance sport you HAVE to dip into that unhealthy zone of being "ghastly thin". the trick is to stay a few pounds on the right side of the line, then only cross that line for several weeks at a time for top competitions.

the alternative, not being ghastly thin, and appearing SOMEWHAT normal in terms of body weight, requires an absolute genetic freak, or someone that is willing to cheat. you get someone that looks more like Makhloufi, who i'm not accusing, just saying he's a genetic freak or he's gassed.

And you strike many here as "unhealthy mentally," homoerotic and unpleasant.

We could argue about Mo's real weight, and it's easy to throw around adjectives like "ghastly," which is pretty subjective. I don't get where the "unhealthy" comes from. seriously, did I miss something? Has Mo been ill? For whatever it's worth, when I was running quite a bit and competing at the marathon distance, certainly not as an elite athlete, I was a fraction under 6'0" tall, and for at least twenty years I weighed between 140 and 145. I was not at all unhealthy at the time. Maybe people thought I looked "ghastly," who knows...
