Speaking personally, recovering and staying in remission from depression requires a holistic approach, meaning mind, body, and spirit. Everyone experiences depression differently, but one thing we can all agree on is that we don't want to feel that way. So, what I can share is that covering all the bases will help keep you feeling the best throughout the ups and downs.
1. Eat Healthy (reduce caffeine, carbs, sugar, dairy) basically anything that makes your body have highs and lows which ultimately affect your overall equilibrium. What you eat really have a major affect on how you feel, it is real.
2. Exercise, keeping the happy endorphins and chemicals up and active. This will help us keep our sluggish chemicals from dropping too low, so think of this as a prescription, a real prescription!
3. Sleep, making sure to rest and know your limits. Turn off phones, tvs, anything busy before you need to go to sleep. Find a relaxing meditation app that can soothe your mind. I personally like the rain app.
4. See your therapist and psychiatrist on a regular basis. Make sure to have someone to talk to about how you are feeling and to be there to support you. We go through ups and downs and it is important to have someone help you overcome the lows of depression when they do come.
