I thought I saw at least 3 steps if not 4 on the line or over. Where are the officials? Is he too big of a name to DQ?
Results say the event is official. I can't believe there won't be a protest. That was pretty clear.
Why would they disqualify him? He gained no advantage by stepping on the line and this was a semi. You don't dq your best sprinter in the semis. They've been pretty lenient all weekend anyway. Rollins wouldn't have made it past the first round otherwise.
I didn't see it anyone have video?

From USATF Handbook.
5. Each competitor must keep in the lanes outside the line or curb marking the
inside of the track, including the diversion from the track for the steeplechase
water jump. In races run entirely in lanes, each competitor must keep in the
allotted lane from start to finish. In races run partially in lanes, each
competitor must keep in the allotted lane from the start to the marked cut-in
points. Unless a material advantage has been gained or the athlete is in
violation of Rule 163.4, a competitor shall not be disqualified if he or she:
(a) is pushed or forced by another competitor to step out of the lane, or
(b) steps out of the lane on the straightaway, or
(c) steps outside of the outer lane line on the curve.
Excluding the above exceptions, the Referee shall disqualify a competitor if
an Umpire reports that the competitor has stepped out of the lane.
NOTE: Material advantage includes improving position by any means,
including exiting from a “boxed” position in the race by having stepped or run
inside the inside edge of the track.
From IAAF Handbook:
Lane Infringement
3. (a) In all races run in lanes, each athlete shall keep within his
allocated lane from start to finish. This shall also apply to any
portion of a race run in lanes.
(b) In all races (or any part of races) not run in lanes, an athlete
running on a bend, on the outer half of the track as per Rule
162.10, or on the diversion from the track for the steeplechase
water jump, shall not step or run on or inside the kerb or line
marking the applicable border (the inside of the track, the outer
half of the track, or the diversion from the track for the
steeplechase water jump).
Except as stated in Rule 163.4, if the Referee is satisfied, on the report
of a Judge or Umpire or otherwise, that an athlete has violated this
Rule, he shall be disqualified.
4. An athlete shall not be disqualified if he
(a) is pushed or forced by another person to step or run outside his
lane or on or inside the kerb or line marking the applicable
border, or
147 RULES 162, 163
IAAF COMPETITION RULES 2012-2013
(b) steps or runs outside his lane in the straight or outside the outer
line of his lane on the bend,
with no material advantage thereby being gained and no other athlete
being jostled or obstructed so as to impede his progress.
Note: Material advantage includes improving his position by any
means, including removing himself from a “boxed” position in the
race by having stepped or run inside the inside edge of the track.
5. In competitions held under Rules 1.1(a), (b), (c) and (f), the 800m
event shall be run in lanes as far as the nearer edge of the breakline
where athletes may leave their respective lanes.
The breakline shall be an arced line marked after the first bend, 5cm
wide, across all lanes other than lane 1. To assist athletes identify the
breakline, small cones or prisms, 5cmx5cm and no more than 15cm
high, preferably of different colour from the breakline and the lane
lines, shall be placed on the lane lines immediately before the
intersection of the lane lines and the breakline.
Note: In international matches, countries may agree not to use lanes.

Seriously, he gained no advantage? He ran a shorter distance than the other runners. Maybe he should have moved into the next lane completely. Would that have given him an advantage?
When are we going to stop talking about disqualifing people based off of their sexual preferences?
this is 2013 for christ's sake. there's no scientific proof that sexual preference has any bearing on that person's ability to represent the U.S. in Track and Field.
Why would Boldon go out of his way to point this out? Gay is clearly the best in the field. It's good for the sport to have him in the final. Track support already sucks. Why make it worse by removing one of the few marketable athletes from the finals?

I hope he isn't DQ'd but Boldon is doing his job. Plain and simple.
Hah love this post. Also love Gay. :D
Well, if they DQ'd Rollins in Round 1, we wouldn't have seen the likely clean 100m Hurdles WR in the final....
Same with Gay - why DQ him for stepping on the line when it didn't give him the advantage needed to make it through to the next round. And he's already lost enough at previous US trials.. (thus including likely medals for the US at the Games)
You are allowed 3 steps on the line before being DQd.
I have not slowed the race down so I don't know what he did.
There is no instant replay in track and field. If the official does not see you, oh well!
One of the worst things in my mind is when a coach or athlete protest something that did not cause them to personally lose the race. If you get beat by a second by someone in a sprint race and they stepped on the line... they would have still won! Get over it and don't be petty.
Normally, stepping on the line in two consecutive steps is clearly considered to be gaining an advantage. For the poster who said it takes three or four steps on the line, I suggest he throw away his state high school rulebook (and read the USATF championship rules) before chiming in on an USATF championship meet.
Too bad, but Gay broke the rules, just as did Berry (in the 400) and the USC guy (in the 400 Hurdles). The officials have been consistent.

You can't be f*cking serious. Whats the point of having rules if they're only going to apply to some of the competitors? I love Tyson Gay but this just can't happen. USATF embarrasing themselves in multiple ways today.
Easy there killer. Gay did not gain an advantage. No one is coming close to him, whether he's on the line or not. Having him in the final is good for the sport.

Said the daydream believer.
Same with Gatlin. In the 100m Semi he stepped on/over the line for 7or8 steps in a row. Then in the Final he stepped on/over it 4or5 times in a row. Was never DQ'd. Double-cheater made the team. 'Murika.

Its not good for the sport to have rules which are only applied to some of the competitors. Period. As much as I want Gay in the final, integrity of the meet is more important.

You are allowed to run out of your lane in the straightaways as long as you don't obstruct anyone.

Stop saying this, moron. If he ran less than his competitors, then he gained an advantage.
