You'd think they would have learned from Indoors.

I am very unclear what happened to Ueceny this year. It seems like the dominant women last year just withered this year. Why?

that is all.
yes she is.
She's from Pass Christian then goes to Florida? Probably felt right at home today. I've run in both locations during the summer. Just awful.
Where did they go? wrote:

Let's just hope that it's just one of those things, and that they get back to form next year.
After all, Jenny Simpson looked pretty bad last year, and she seems to be doing just fine this year.
And then there's Treniere Moser, who has not looked good for several years.

You mean a lot of years.
"Championship Racing" has gone too far. This is some boring s4!t, and I love track. Who in that field actually thought that going out so slow would put them in a position to win? Maybe a handful. What were the rest doing? Did they have no intention of trying to win?
People gotta start running the race that will benefit them the most. I am certain that there were enough runners in that field who would do better in a faster race that if a couple had gone, more would have followed. It would not have been a lone runner trying to "keep it honest".
Cummon, I could have kept up with them and that's slow!
They thought they were running a marathon on the track

Stop trying to make "marathon on a track" happen. It's not going to happen.

As defending champion Simpson has auto entry. It doesn't matter what McGee does. If McGee does not get the B then Rowbury goes.
As far as Cain, she has run sub 2 this year, is the U.S. indoor champ, and has the fastest indoor mile time. That seems pretty consistent. More importantly, she is still improving rapidly. It is likely she is capably of 4 in the right race, and who knows what she will do in Moscow.
But if not Cain, who would you send instead?
ok, I forgot about Simpson's bye. But Rowbury still illustrates the point. She hasn't run all that well this year, but she has loads of experience both running fast, and placing in championships.
Imagine a USATF team coach rather than a selection process. You send who is most likely to medal. I would pick Rowbury over McGee, and over Cain too. Cain's best tactic is to hang back in last and hope to outkick some people. That worked at NC's but it won't medal in Moscow. She's impressive, but she's not a Jedi yet.

no one thinks that was a great race. 2:40 at 800 meters? Rowbury blew it. She doesn't have the kick to sit there and wait for the final lap. She should have gone with 700 to go.
This is why diamond league has pacemakers. No one would watch this crap on a regular basis. Great for kickers though.
If you think that the predictabe, boring DL races are more intersting then you are a complete retard.
Swimming IS done based on place. Ever hear of the United States Olympic Swimming Trials, held every 4 years?

The point is that the fastest runner ALWAYS WINS, so the objective should be to run the fastest race that is possible.
This way the duel objectives can be met, running one's best, and placing the highest based on one's capabilities, not tossing one's ability in the trash and partaking of a cr/pshoot.
False. The fastest TIME always wins. The fastest runner often does not.
I was there for the race, and the heat and humidity didn't help, but to go out in a 85-second 1st 400 is something that you don't expect. The entire pack was playing "Who will go out and set pace first?" The race was barely 150 meters in and the crowd was already doing a collective WTF.
If you watched Cain, she didn't know what to do with herself. As soon as the gun went off she immediately went to the back of the pack thinking that that is where she belonged "if the right pace was done to start." When they hit the first lap in 85 seconds, you can see in Cain's body language that she wasn't sure what to do; she was trying to decide if she should stay there or move to the front.
What was fascinating about the race was how Cain ran a faster last lap than Uceny or Rowbury. I was not expecting that, but I don't know if Cain would have done the same (or qualified) had they started at a faster pace.

if all prelims and semis were decided solely by TIME, then that would NOT be the case. All the times would be much faster, as happens in swimming where records keep being bettered year after year. Running for time is PROGRESSIVE, whereas running for place is redundant.

Good grief, and the sun doesn't shine in the sky?

The fastest runner is the one with the fastest time from point A to point B, from the start of the race to the finish.

this is not necessarily true. Cory McGee is known to kind of break down the last 100m and she was still able to hold it together to get 3rd. The women that have no shot of top 3 can surprise the field in a slow race like this. She positioned herself up front the whole time where Rowbury just kind of waited in the back and had more ground to cover.

If Coburn couldn't Steeple she should have run the 1500. She isn't afraid to lead and is the Indoor mile champ and about 4:06 for the 1500. And Sarah B you don't have the 400 speed so why not push the pace early.
That was a dud race
If Coburn could have run she would be heading to Moscow as the Steeplechase champ. She has a serious lower back injury that needs a lot of recovery time.
How did that happen?
Nevermind, J.R. I now understand the point you were making. Disregard my comments. Yes, swimming in prelims and finals must be quick because they make the final based on time. In track, it is by place, which does make for slower tactical races. I agree.
