I am running the Great North Run in 12-13 weeks time and just bought this book, the schedule C peaks at 72 miles however im concerned with the lack of quality workouts, for example those who don't have access to the book:
Week 6: 15 mile long run, 10 mile long run, 5 x 3:00 moderately steep uphill
No speed workout? Should I throw a speed workout in there for good measure or follow the program step by step?
(Im aiming for sub 1:25)

I havent looked at that book in a while. Have you looked over Run Fast by Brad Hudson? I'm thinking of using his schedule. Going for around 1:20.
Dont have that book, Pfitzingers is the only one I have.
Bumping this, as I recently bought "Road Racing" and have wondered this myself.
It seems like the race specific training schedules look more like base plans...no? Even the striders are prescribed sparingly.
Exactly. Perhaps the midweek long run should be progressive starting at easy pace and finishing at 10k pace? I would only describe this as a moderate workout though.
I'm going to add another weekly session to every week, not too taxing but here's a sample from week 2(10 weeks till race)
Sun - 14.6m long run (easy pace throughout)
Mon - 5.6m recovery/easy
Tue - 4 mile tempo run
Wed - 5.6m recovery/easy
Thu - 9m progressive run
Fri - 7m w/8x100 strides
Sat - AM: Cruise intervals(3-6mile.) PM: 3 mile shakeout/recovery
Thoughts?
If you know the workouts you need to do, why follow a written schedule at all?
