Good call. I've never understood how Nirvana became the face of early '90s rock while Pavement remained relatively obscure. The fact that Kurt Cobain is regarded as a musical genius while the name Stephen Malkmus is met with a resounding "who?" is tough to understand.
I'd go with Vampire Weekend. I really liked their first two albums, but their new release is on another level.

I think Miles Davis is my favorite artist. The artists he nutured (Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams) are giants in their own right. He re-invented himself and his music constantly, rather than making the same album over and over again and is a musical reference point to this day for musicians in numerous and disparate genres.
The Rolling Stones collectively and Keith Richards singularly. The songwriting, the sounds, the attitude, the musicianship, the honesty...
