Yeah, she got a BA in Anthropology 20 years ago and has not actually worked in the field at all, though she was an EMT for a while. She's been calling herself a medical anthropologist for a while now... her education seems to consist of reading articles online and nothing more. I talked to her about cancer once and it was clear she didn't even know what it was...

Although I'd toss away the political overtones. I work in a hospital and can tell you the less educated people wearing white coats acting like doctors are more often republican.
America is abound with people trying to get respect (and or money) off looking more important than they are.

I also work in a hospital and the phenomenon of non-physicians wearing white coats is insane. It really is amazing how many people have no shame and think that they are every bit as good as a doctor because they're an "advanced practice nurse" or something equally stupid. Pro tip: if you see someone dressed well and NOT wearing a white coat, they probably are a physician. If you see someone wearing a white coat, odds are, they're a physician assistant or nurse.
