Gosh--I would have thought Joe Vigil might have known what he's doing, but on your account he's badly informed. Wow.

I'd have to guess that now Moser will be running the 1500 rather than the 5.

wow - that sure improves Cain's chances of making it to Moscow.

The best team needs to have runners who can get through rounds, obviously.
By your logic, we could just race the top 8 guys in a timed final for the 100/200/400/110h/400h. Guaranteed nobody outside of that list makes the team. But the guy who does make it should be the one from that group who handles rounds best.
Agreed! In fact, they should have 3 rounds at 1500m since this is what our team will face in Moscow!
What we should have is a 9 day national meet with the same schedule as worlds, but I guess USATF doesn't have the budget for that. Sad.

It's gonna be real interesting to see how AlSal plays it.
Does he move Cain down to the 800m, where she'd have a good chance of making the US team but would have a tough time making an impact at worlds, or does he keep her in the 1500m, where US nationals are going to be a shoot out [even going 4 deep] but where Cain would have a kickers chance of doing something special at worlds if she can manage to make the final.
If he keeps Cain in the 1500m, does he then limit Moser to the 5000m or keep her in the 1500m, where she could end up keeping Cain off the team?
I would HOPE that he puts them in the event he thinks they have the best shot of medaling or making finals in at worlds. If both go for the 1,500 it will be a dogfight and however is on that day will go to Worlds. I hope Cain goes to worlds in the 1,500 simply so she can get a rematch with Kipyegon. Something tells me that Cain is in good enough shape to beat her right now. I think Faith is peaking early. I was surprised to see her go 3:56-4:01-4:05.. I'm curious if she'll bounce back by worlds.. there is still a LONG time til Moscow.
If I was Salazar, I would put Cain in the 1,500. It's obviously her favorite event and it's not like she doesn't stand a chance in it. She's got the best kick of any US female distance runner right now (besides Simpson maybe).
My guess for the 1,500 world champ qualifiers..
Simpson (lock)
Moser
Cain
Uceny

Curious...why do you think Uceny will make it? There are about 10 other women who have run faster this year...why not Rowbury or Mackey?
The question is who will best represent the USA at Worlds where our athletes have to run 3 very tough and very strategic rounds. As fun and exciting as it would be to have a 17 year old run in Moscow, she just isn't ready to represent the USA at that level yet.
My predictions for the USA Team at 1500m
Simpson - yes - running great and has the auto qualifier
Moser - yes - running great from 800 - 5k
Rowbury - yes - closed great in NY and was strong at Pre 5k
Uceny - yes - only if healthy and able to get training in
If Uceny hasn't been able to get the training in then I'm guessing Anderson will take her spot since Mackey has been complaining of a troubled hamstring recently.
Because Uceny was ranked #1 in the world before her fall in 2011 and probably would have won the gold at WC. Not to mention she has run 4 flat and can close fast if healthy. I think she squeezes in and I think Cain's kick gives her a shot at WC finals. She's gonna win WC gold in a slow tactical affair. Kidding.
the w 1500 at USAs will be fascinating to watch - a massive pressure cooker since there are probably 8 women who have a shot at the team. Perhaps every person in the final will feel she has a legit shot at the team.
It will be interesting to see who rises to it and who folds.
I think there's zero chance Cain will run the 800. Salazar sees her as a 1500 runner and she has a superb chance to make the team, especially since we get three independent of Simpson and Martinez is running the 800.

WHY THE FVCK

WHY THE FVCK
don't track championships stagger events?
100,400,1500,10000 should be on different days than
200,800,5000, both relays

Are the trials timetable set up so that if USA have a medal contender in both 800 and 1500m, theres really unrealistic they will be able to qualify for the USA teams in both events? Say you get a version of Coe/Ovett, either female or male, would they have a hard time qualifying because of the timetable?
Still waiting for a reply, so when you guys are busy discussing how Cain will get to WC (which she will not) I'm here waiting. Just waiting.
I say again, this makes absolutely no sense to me for 2 reasons. Right now, only Moser and Simpson could challenge Martinez in a tactical 1500m; even if she does not run a perfect race, unless she trips and falls, she will make the WC team in the 1500. (And, Simpson may not even run the 1500m.)
Whereas, the 800m only has 2 spots up for grabs and there are nearly a dozen women with 1:58 to 2 flat credentials like Vessey, Wallace, Price, Moore, Thomas, Wright, Gall, Pierce, Schmidt, Wilson, Roesler and Beckwith. Some of these women have not been running great lately, but you never know come 2 weeks from now. If athletes like Vessey and Moore show up in shape, Martinez does not want to end up in a footrace to the finish line with them or one of the younger athletes Ajee who are trying to make a name for themselves.
...risky, risky, risky

I hadn't heard anything about Simpson not running the 1500.
She just did in Rome. What's the scoop?
Cain's tactically savvy, has run 4:04.8 and has among the best if not the best 800m and 400m pr's in the remaining 1500m field with Martinez out. Plus, the U.S. has three spots in addition to Simpson, who is running great but has the slot as reigning world champion. So, Cain stands an excellent shot of qualifying, despite her age. She ran that 4:04 a week after 2:01 and now has dropped 2 s in the 800. She stands a chance at breaking 4 this year if she races in Europe after U.S. champs. I mean, Moser has run 4:02 already. Uceny, Rowbury, and other experienced runners will make it tough but they are not in their sub 4 or 4 flat shape right now.

How do you know what kind of 1500m shape they are in? Gheez, can I use your crystal ball?
I think it would be foolish to count out athletes like Uceny and Rowbury; their season is based on successfully making it through the rounds at USATF. Up to this point in the season, the USATF 1500m final is the only race that counts; they don't expect to run fast until they go over to Europe.

+1
The only reason I could see AlSal moving Cain down to the 800m is to take her out of a high pressure 1500m final where, among other things, a nasty fall is a genuine possibility. In the 800m Cain can either follow Montanyo if she sets her usual hard pace or set the pace herself if no one else does. In that kind of an 800m, I think Cain is very likely to be sub 2, and I think anything sub 2 is likely to make the US team.
BMart looking sharp:
Brenda Martinez @bmartrun
Pre meet workout done. 400 @ 57, 300 @ 43, 200 @ 29, 100 @ 11.93 @NBRunning 800V2's felt amazing!! #teamnb
Assuming that's not FAT.. so hand conversion puts the 100 at 12.16-12.18? we know she's got wheels but that seems impressive even given what we've seen in her races.

Sorry to disappoint all, but Brenda has zero, and I mean zero chances of getting a medal in the 800 m. Not to say that she is not a good runner but, there are just too many runners better than her in this particular distance
