That was one hell of a group. Sad to see him go so relatively young. Thanks for the article, great stuff.
Very sad to hear. I'm old enough to remember Keough and his teammates (Pinkowski, Chapa) all breaking 9:00 the same year - a remarkable feat. When you start seeing your own generation expire, it is indeed an unpleasant reminder of just how fast life passes by.
I was a high school runner in the early 1980's. They had 3 runners under 9:00. My coach in high school for motivation gave me photocopied TNF News high school yearly lists going back to 1974.
The big names I recall were Eric Hulst, Ralph Serna, Salazar, Scharsu, and then one school in Indiana with three runners under 9:00 for 2 miles (8:56 3200).
There has never been three high schoolers like that team before or since.
That trio is part of the greatest folklore track could ever imagine.

They were the big guns, along with Bill McChesney.
Really good reads. Thanks for posting.
A couple of articles I've seen have been inaccurate in stating that the Hammond guys were ranked 1, 2, and 4 in the nation in 1975. They actually ranked 3t, 5, and 8t
8:45.0 Eric Hulst
8:46.0 Ralph Serna
8:51.0 Rudy Chapa
8:51.0 George Watts
8:52.8 Tim Keough
8:55.8 Bill McChesney
8:56.0 Richard Aguirre
8:56.2 Roy Kissin
8:56.2 Carey Pinkowski
The 1,2,4 thing comes from the Sports Illustrated article on them, which said that was their ranking as of May 29 of that year, which was the latest info before the article went to press.

George Watts, Thomas Edison HS (VA) coached by John Cook, U.Tenn All-American and U.Tenn Head Coach until 2011.
What a group. Every runner in northwest Indiana knew about these guys. Local legends.
Pin used to say that Keough was the most talented of the three.
May he rest in peace. All three of these runners were extremely fast in high school,I know that to be true because I ran against them for Hammond Tech I graduated in 1974 we use to race against them at Harrison Park in our cross country meets our coach was Mr Shryock. On our meet day he told us too stay up with them they were too fast need I say anymore!!
