I know that letsrun has a several hundred page thread on loss of coordination in your leg(s) while running and I have read most of it and feel that my problem is different.
For the past year or so I have been suffering from what I can only describe as coordination issues with my left leg. What separates my problem from the typical one described in the aforementioned thread is that my leg feels uncoordinated from the very start of most runs and feels uncoordinated while going slow as well, although it is mush more pronounced going fast.It hasn't been crippling but I haven't been able to make much progress with it and if anything it seems to be getting worse. I'll try to describe the problem as thoroughly as possible and hopefully lestrun can save the day.
I have spent a lot of time trying to pinpoint the main factors and sensations I feel and have noticed a few things. In general it feels as though my stride is very asymmetric; to be more precise my left leg feels like it has to swing wide and then hook inward to get under my body in my pull through phase of running. Furthermore my left foot seems to supinate and plantar flex more than my right foot just before I contact the ground, especially at fast paces. I have also noticed less ankle eversion and more inversion in my left ankle and I tend to roll my ankle a lot while running. It seems like my muscle firing pattern and timing on my left leg may be out of sequence as well. What I mean by this is that it feels like my calf fires too early and causes the excessive supination and plantar flexion. I have also noticed more "paw back" in my left leg than right. In general it just feels as though my left leg is out of line and bowed out. Sometimes while running fast my knee will sort of collapse outward and I tend to rotate my toe inward while running fast too. Some days it really isn't too bad but lately most runs have been very annoying due to this constant loss of coordination.
As far as shoes I run in Kinvara 3s, Nike Vomeros, Asics Speedstars, and Brooke's Pureflows and I have definitely noticed a difference in sensation and severity of the loss of coordination based on shoe type. From best to worst the shoes go: Pureflow, Kinvara, Speedstar, Vomero. This leads me to believe that a more minimal heel-toe drop helps and that a wide forefoot helps as well.
This problem developed after returning from a break after cross season. I ran high mileage (120 MPW) and was grinding pretty hard so I didn't run very fast or do many strides or form drills through most of my base training so I think I developed some imbalances and issues from the block of training that haven't resolved themselves even after a long layoff due to injury.
Has anyone experinced this sort of thing? Care to help me out?
