Not if the winds are really 20 mph
I don't really see it. Maybe 4:02.
That workout is about as impressive as your spelling mate. If he doubled the reps then I'd be getting excited.
I don't mean to knock the kid at all. He's clearly a top runner, but this isn't a stand out workout to me. He's capable of more than that.
keep in mind he ran this workout at elevation
I'd give him a nod of approval for that workout but I wouldn't call it sub4 shape. Have him jog for 3min, repeat the set, and then maybe sub 4 capable.
At 4,000+ ft , in training shoes, according to him it's the first time he has really tried to do something fast. "First time I've ran 2:02 in a workout"
He looked so smooth.
Put on the spikes and go down to sea level and watch out.
What's the elevation?
At sea level I know I could have done that easily and I was only a 4:03 miler about 2 years older than him. Especially if those jog recoveries were super slow shuffles.
If that 800 repeat was 1:59 then I I would say he would be close to 4:00 ready.
It doesn't indicate he's ready to go out in 1:58 for 800 and have another 2:00.
I 400 in 58 then 200 meter jog then an 800 in 2:00 and finishing in 58.0 would convince me he could sneak under 4:00 for the mile in the right race.
4600ft
He said he had a little bit under a minute of jogging
20 mph winds with 60% chance of rain of Saturday in NY. No one is going under 4

Then I would say he is right there close.
Maybe it has something to do with youth or camera angle, but that's the first time that 4:00 pace actually looks like 4:00 pace, like he has to work for it. Normally, you see these elites make race pace look like they're out for a casual stroll.
*ridiculous
The workout in and of itself is not super impressive from him, but all of the variables included:(his current season improvements, 800m-3200m times, closing speed, first time doing that type of workout, beating montoya, in trainers and at altitude, his attitude, Salazars group trains there) I say he beats arroyo and gets second to cheserek. He looks like his training is taking him in the right direction for saturday.

Did he really say "it's the first time he has really tried to do something fast"? Or are you insinuating that?
According to your quote, he said it was the "First time I've ran 2:02 in a workout" ... which is different completely.
Do you really think that a bona fide 4:05/8:49 guy in his senior year has never run "something fast" before May 23rd in his senior year?
I think he just had never run an 800m rep as fast as 2:02 before (in a workout)!! I remember once running 2:07 in a workout (time trial), resting 3:00, then running 6X400m in 61. That was a PR at the time, for practice or otherwise, but it WAS NOT THE first time I ran fast in practice.
Also, if he says he had "under a minute" of rest, realize that that means :55 two times.
Saarel is a great runner, and I wish him all the best, but he ran 4:02 for 1600m in this workout with almost 2:00 of rest. That does not indicate a 3:58 mile. He may end up running one, but it won't be because of this.
Last thing: 4500 ft is not high altitude.
How much "redicule" was he subjected to?
gotta love his great attitude! very humble
He said both of those things. That it was his first time doing something fast, although he mentioned he was running 1200's in previous workouts- and that it was his first time running 202 in a workout. watch the flotrack video, it's free

It might, some people race faster than they train. If I ran this workout I would expect myself to run a 3:58 mile, but then again I am not workout champion. I find 400's at mile pace to be challenging. Especially in trainers, especially solo, especially with little rest.
But I guess we'll see what Saarels runs tomorrow and we can find out if he's more the type who runs good workouts or good races.
I did a workout similar to that in high school and came nowhere near 4 flat.
