Zola set a 1500m PB (4:06.87) when she was about 4 months older than Cain is now. She didn't run 4:01.81 until she was about 9 months older than Cain is now. Her 8:39 3000m (1177) at 1.5 months younger is on par with Cain's (based on IAAF scoring tables) 4:04.62 (1169).
I'd say they're pretty even. Who knows? Cain may set more records this summer. I'm full on the train.
There are both prodigious talents. We'll never know who is better.

The truth is that Budd ran 3:59.96 at almost double Mary's age (29). And Budd's mid distance times are ALREADY within Mary's reach. Mary Decker and Suzy (3:57) you can argue about. Compared to Cain, Budd's a plow horse at the same age.

This is an exaggeration. Although Budd did not denounce apartheid at the time--thus lending to her controversial role--she never espoused white supremacist viewpoints, nor did she defend apartheid.
Nevertheless, the entire build up to and unfolding of events at the LA Games was a fiasco.
You don't have to go back too far in U.S. history to find sports figures who, while less controversial, said some pretty terrible things.
You can start with Avery Brundage.

Zola ran 3:59 when she was 19, not 29. She set multiple world records and won multiple world championships. At the same age, Zola was faster than cain. Better looking, too.
