Prefontaine
It's like Without Limits, but more of a documentary

Prefontaine was an absolutely awful movie. I was one of the few people that saw it at the theater and all five of us were angry about how bad of a job they did. Without Limits didn't come out for at least another year and I was so happy they did such a good job compared to Prefontaine. The people that knew Pre all pretty much agree that Without Limits was much better and more realistic, although both movies had quite a few half truths.

The one you saw first.
I have Fire on the Track, Prefontaine, and Without Limits. Without Limits is my personal favorite and it's not even close. There might be some historical liberties in this film, and perhaps even some outright errors, but the acting and production quality compared to Disney's Prefontaine are waaaaaay better. Crudup and Sutherland do a great job, I think.
If you're more into documentaries, then Fire on the Track is probably more your thing.

I agree with the above statement.
Prefontaine is terrible in comparison to Without Limits and Fire on the Track. Both Without Limits and Fire on the Track are fantastic, personally I would give the edge to Without Limits.
I thought Jared Leto did a fine job in "Prefontaine" but the structure of the film, part drama and part sort-of-documentary, was wacky. "Without limits" is better.
In 2001, we had a contest about the best running movies of all time:
Fire on the Track narrowly beat out Without Limits.
After being forced to sit through each one at least half a dozen times at various team functions throughout high school and college, I think they all suck.

If you watch interviews with Pre, he was nothing like the Leto character. Crudup was much more like the real Pre. Same with Sutherland over the actor that played Bowerman in Prefontaine. Bowerman was nothing like him. Prefontaine made both Pre and Bowerman look like aholes and neither was really like that.
The best is a little known 75 minute documentary made in 1972 prior to the OT. Features a lengthy interview with Pre, his teammates, competitors, HS coach, and many clips from his HS and college races. I don't know if it can be found or not and I'm quite surprised it hasn't appeared by now. I'm sure someone in the Eugene community has a copy.

Prefontaine is ok. It's a little more "cartoony", I guess. But it's a Disney movie so that's not surprising. I think the main thing that turned me off about that film is the fake interviews. Why in the world did they do that? It was incredibly cheesy.
I'm also partial because I really like Billy Crudup as an actor. He does a great job as Pre.
can someone elaborate as to what 40 year old documentary this dude was talking about over a decade ago?
which movie depicted Pre gifting a box of shoes to a girl? I saw that brief scene on television back when I was getting into running, but didn't know who he was.
