I'll toss this out for discussion.
In our state there are no prelims for the 1600M at state. At the qualifying race, time is important because you get placed in heats at state based on it. So it behooves the runners to collaborate to run fast at the qualifying race.
I watched an older runner sit about 1 meter behind a younger runner from his own school for 3 3/4 laps and then sprint past him for the win. They didn't run as fast as they might have had they helped each other out, and likely cost themselves a spot in the fast heat at State.
I come from bike racing and that sit on a team mate, let them do all the work and then sprint past them for the win is absolutely not allowed.
What are your thoughts? They were the only two who qualified and the kid who made the race gets the booby prize of a spot in the slow heat at state.
