A Chariots of Fire moment for Cain fans

She's good, but the British club system is going to hold her back. Unfortunately she doesn't have top organized competition like in the US. The best thing for her to be would run in the naia.

I also really like Jessica Judd (great talent)...but comparing her to Mary Cain is old news...she's 1 1/2 years older. Her 1500M PR is over 5 secs slower than Mary Cain's. I would say more likely there is some East African teenager out there who may be just as fast.

I'm not trying to be the first to make the comparison (in fact, I'm one of the folks who has made it before). I just thought that extraordinary clip of her running away from the field with that beautiful green infield in the background reminded me of the scene where Liddell runs a local race in Scotland.

The video is the key. In race after race, Cain is pulled along by the best runners in the world--even Dibaba. She is like Abrahams running for Cambridge. Judd runs alone, a natural. Did you switch on the full screen and look at that stride? Just watch Judd run the backstretch and you'll see why she belongs on the same level.

Of course, I wander a little about that Icelandic girl. Can't remember her name. Same age. Same extraordinary stride.

Judd is a year and 4 months older than Cain. Her 1500 PR was run last summer and she has been concentrating on the 8 this year, which she considers her better event. That 4:09.93 PR was run three days after she ran a PR in the 8 in 2:00.96.

It is Judd's two PRs three days apart that I find especially remarkable. Cain and Judd will both be age-eligible next year for the World Juniors.

For whatever it's worth, I despised the first half of "Chariots." Not being a masochist I declined to see the rest. A pretentious soap with an overdose of treacle in the background music.
