What was it like? Lots of stress? Rolling in big money?
What was it like? Lots of stress? Rolling in big money?
I knew a guy who bought a McDonald's franchise in 1980, and built a brand new store. He did this as a 45ish year old, after working his career for a big franchisee in Chicago-I think he was a manager of a couple units working for some guy who owned a dozen restaurants. The upfront cost was around 750K-remember, this is 30 years ago. Dude drove a Delorean in the mid 80s.
Made buckets of money-his restaurant was right off the Interstate, and was the only fast food with easy interstate access for 100 miles-also in what could arguably be called a Colorado resort area. Grossed 10K a day every weekday, 15K on the weekends (again, 30 years ago.) He had a great location.
His daughters (managers of the restaurant) became cokeheads-one went to jail for dealing to the employees. He moved back to the midwest after a decade or so. His company still owns the store-but he's been gone for 20 years. Just cashes checks now. I don't know if he still has the DeLorean.
