I saw he had competed with Eaton and Hardee the other day in Atlanta. Is he not in school anymore? He seems to have a lot of potential, good luck to the guy!

He is not on the Arkansas roster
Gunnar liked to train hard, and relaxxxxxx with a big 'ol fatty when he was done. Unfortunately, NCAA rules prohibit this and also require that you maintain a certain GPA while competing in Intercollegiate athletics... Gunnar was trying to buck the system!
With that said, he has a legit shot at making the team this year, but he'll have to go 8200+.
The only other guys I can see challenging him beside the obvious are...
Beach
Harlan
Horn
As of now, the US only has two guys with the A standard. The US will take a total of 4, if two others can go 8200+.
And that, is your news... back to you, Jack!
Looks as if he just baaaaaaarely missed the trip to Moscow. Not a knock him as an athlete, but maybe he'll need a few years to mature a little bit before he starts reppin the red, white and blue on the big stage. Like building 7, I heard from some of the guys on the team that he still didn't know where a classroom building was by the end of his freshman year but could sure as heck find the track and a nice doobie.
I've actually had the pleasure to know Gunnar before, during, and after college. To start off, he never wanted to go to college for Athletics... Others pushed him to do something he never wanted to do. He wanted to continue training and get his degree in the process on his time. He never thought highly of the NCAA, which I also think is a joke. (They get whatever they can out of you and kick you to the curb.) They dont truly develop the athletes. Athletes of Gunnars caliber (at his age) honestly shouldnt go to the NCAA in the first place. He never got caught up in the "extra carricular" activities until he was so depressed in college obout how his whole situation was. He's a very intelligent young man and you're wrong about him not making the World Championship team... The USA can take 1 B standard, and guess what, that's Gunnar! Yes, the best 20 year old American decathlete ever! He did it under unfavorable conditions also.. Just saying he's honestly an amazing young man, and also coached himself this entire year which is VERY impressive! He was also the USA indoor champion with a new World age 20 best in the Heptathlon! He now has the best agent in the world in Paul Doyle. The same agent as Ashton Eaton and Trey Hardee. Also just last week moved to Chula Vista California to live and train at the US Olympic Training Center! Now it's really the time to see this young talent grow and develop! Yes he made some mistakes at Arkansas, but he's on the right path now! (We all make mistakes at some point in life.. What's awesome is that he's corrected his mistakes this year, and is on the up and up and getting ready to to some even more amazing things!).
Oh hey, Gunner did make the team. Check your facts Jack......
Big decathlon fan and just stumbled across this so I just have to say: Good to see that he's got himself back on the right track after all that's gone on in the last year or so because this kid is a MAJOR talent.
However, as someone who's been through the collegiate system and had some decathlon success, I don't quite agree with the whole "the NCAA is a messed up system" argument. Let's face it, IT'S TOUGH. But it makes it a lot easier to succeed later on in life than trying to finish your degree in your late 20s, early 30s. And I feel that it taught me a lot more about being a better person and handling real life responsibilities. There's just something you can't replicate in having to be a part of a team and chasing team accomplishment, dealing with grades and teachers, and just being around a portion of the population who thinks about more than just a sport (speaking of the academic side). *This argument has nothing to do with Gunnar, I just don't agree with this growing view that the NCAA is such an evil entity like many others do. Like what exactly does the NCAA get out of a track athlete? Nothing. No money. Nothing. The track athletes are actually what benefit from the major sports. How else could many track teams afford hundreds of pairs of shoes, gear, world class weight rooms, travel, tracks, training and rehabilitation centers and coaching? The answer, the NCAA. So no, I don't think the NCAA is trying to "get whatever they can out of you and kick you to the curb" for track athletes. The track athlete actually gets world class training while being set up to be an even better person once your track career ends.
"liked to train hard, and relaxxxxx with a big 'ol fatty"
That sounds a lot like former Razorback, Eric Thompson....except for the train hard part
Congrats to Gunnar. He has a lot of peeps in his corner, but he did some great work on his own and his own way!
PUT 15 lbs of muscle on him and he will be big star and is also good looking .
