This is always something that I think runners don't do enough.
It may be happening this year, but I think Symmonds could be one of the best 1500m runners in the world. He is a strength 800m runner which leads me to think moving up might work well for him - realizing of course that he is one of the best 800m runners on Earth.
Who do you think should move up a distance?
1) Lagat could be a world class 10k if he bumped up in mileage.
2) Will Leer would have a disgusting kick in a 5k.

I disagree with Lagat, Symmonds and Leer moving up. Lagat is already running up in the 5k and has great closing speed. Symmonds is a 1:42 guy and unless he is guaranteed a medal in the 1500 he should stay with the 800 where he got 5th in the Olympics. He would have to be able to close with Mak Daddy and Kiprop to justify moving up. If he moved up, ran 3:32 and qualified for the finals in the world championships he would still be no where near the level he has achieved at the 800. Leer has great closing speed in the 1500 and if he can get the A it is his best shot at making a team. He has consistently placed high at the trials and even gotten third place so if he gets the standard there is a decent chance that he could kick his way onto a world championship team. I don't see that happening in the 5k where he would have to be running around 13:00 to make a team. He could clip someone like wheating at the line in a 1500 but to see him beating Lagat, Lomong or Rupp in a 5k seems hard to imagine.
I think Abubakar Kaki might want to take a look at the 1500. He has run a 3:31 so he could handle a fast pace. With his 1:42 speed I think he could have a Mak Daddy type kick. With Rudisha, Aman, Kitum and Amos it is going to get very hard for Kaki to try to medal in the 800.
cam levins needs to move up to the marathon.
Ryan Hall should do some more mountain runs/ultras. Didn't he do a race in the Tioga Pass area once? How would he have done against Jornet this past weekend?

I agree with you with Lagat, but Symmonds might be more successful at 1500m. Centrowitz and Manzano have shown that a little speed at the end of a 1500m can get you far. They both have had more success internationally than Symmonds. Symmonds struggles with not enough low end speed to medal at the 800m.
Now I don't know if Symmonds can establish the aerobic capacity that the two others seem to have, but if he did he has enough speed to do more damage than Centrowitz.

Yeah, Symmonds. If short guy Manzano can run that fast and medal, Symmonds could do well... I think he says that he trains like a 1500m guy, mileage etc.
800 guys: Symmonds, Kaki, basically anyone on the endurance side of this event.
1500 guys: Gebremedhin, Kiprop (I think with 5k specific training Kiprop could be a potential WR threat). basically any non-kicker that has shown strong endurance (Webb a long time ago)
5000 guys: Longosiwa, Soi
10000 guys: can't think of any here
Borlee twins up to 800.
looks to me like symmonds would need to lose some weight to run 3:30-1.
