I have been thinking about the rock band Chicago.
Does anybody know why drummer Danny Seraphine was fired from the band back in 1990?
I have always thought this band has a strong, authoritative, somewhat corporate vibe to it (as opposed to the usual confederation of disorganized musicians), as when Peter Cetera wanted to make solo records but also stay in the band, but the band made him pick one or the other. Cetera chose solos, had great success, and Chicago lost the most identifiable voice in their band.
Also, I remember how coldly many band members talked about Terry Kath after he accidentally shot himself in 1978. So to me they give off a somewhat chilly vibe toward each other at times.
I've also wondered if Dire Straits might have been taking a swipe at Chicago in Sultans of Swing (He don't give a damn about any trumpet playing band/It ain't what he calls rock 'n roll). Just wonderin'.
Anyway, does anyone know anything about the circumstances that caused Seraphine's firing? It's never made sense to me, and I've never found an explanation on the 'net that gives any details. I always thought he was a great drummer.
