I'm a decent high school distance athlete and cannot eat meat or eggs because of religious reasons. I watch my diet and don't really eat any junk food and I try my best to get the amount of protein I need (I get at least 60-80 grams a day) and watch other things I need like carbs and fats.
I found out I had an iron deficiency in the fall after having a couple of crappy races and realized that I had only focused on getting enough protein etc. and had not paid any attention to my vitamin intake. I started watching my vitamin and mineral intake as well and especially focused on my iron intake. I started eating vitamin fortified cereal and ate spinach 3-4 times a week. I retook a blood test about a month ago (6 months later) and my ferritin count had gone up by 12 points to 29 but I found out I have a vitamin D deficiency and a "below normal low" wbc count. I don't know how I have the vitamin D deficiency since I drink milk twice a day (with cereal in the morning and after practice) and I'm in the sun for what I assume is enough time.
I spoke to my doctor and she prescribed my vitamin D tablets that I will take once a week but she also told me I could take multivitamins to help prevent these deficiencies after I suggested it. So my question is, are there any multivitamins that you would suggest for a vegetarian high school athlete?
Also, anyone have any other ideas/information/experience about what could possibly be causing these issues (other than my vegetarian diet)?
Sorry for the long post and thank you for your help!
