I'm pretty slow right now, but I'm 35 and I just resumed running last year after a 17 year layoff.
In high school I ran 16:53 for 5k as a 16 year-old senior. And that was off just a few months training, since I hadn't run the summer before.
When I picked up running again last March, I was probably in 25-flat 5k shape (I had actually started running a bit the year before THAT, but gotten injured wakesurfing. But that's another story)
Now, a little more than a year later, I'm probably around 20:30. The best I've actually done was 20:59, but that was in a 6k race. I did 21:06 in an actual 5k where I pulled an Webb and somehow fired off a 5:36 first mile (obviously died after that).
I'm doing 25-30 miles per week, mostly around 8-flat pace during the week, with one track workout on Saturday (mile repeats or 400 intervals) and a long run (10 miles) on Sunday.
I think getting down to 18:30 or so should be doable, but will I get there on this routine? I'd gladly run more miles, but it's hard to find the time with two kids and a full-time job. Still, I really want to AT LEAST run 18:30, and I kind of secretly want to beat my old 16:53 pr. Thoughts?
