from Nov 2012 to Mar 2013 (5 months) I dropped from mid 16s to 15:40s. PR had been 17:03 until march but i was in shape for 16:30-40 on a track. mileage was 50 mpw summer 2012, 60s through XC, and for all of 2013 starting jan 1st it was 70s.
I personally have had a PR of over 3 minutes (5k) over the course of 4 months of training. I would say it depends on the type of training you do. I was just running 6 days a week, once a day. Your body becomes more efficient at running as time goes on (when you run) so it's pretty easy to improve on a non-elite level.
what was ur time before and after?
Biggest drop I've personally had:
5k PR was technicallay 18:35 from XC soph year, although I went much faster in tempo runs and time trialed a 17:10 3 mile, so lets say ~17:55ish for 5k.
Got injured after XC season (10 day break, ran and got immense knee pain which ended up being 6 weeks of no running but with cross-training) and came into track season thinking I was in horrible shape, but was running pretty good PRs after 6ish weeks.
Championship meet went by, and then I went to a post-season 5000, first ever on a track and ran 16:24 which is like 5:16? pace. At that time my 3200 PR was only 10:14 and 1600m 4:51, and the 5k was 3 weeks after those PRs.
