A couple of weeks ago Nicole Michmerhuizen of Calvin College ran a 34:09 10k at the Hillsdale Relays. She is currently 1st in the 10k in DIII by over a minute. 34:09 was a meet record by over 30 seconds and a school record by a minute and a half.
I was skeptical about her race but figured it was legit after she was recognized as national runner of the week and her time remained on Tffers weeks after her performance.
I bring it up now because Nicole raced again this past weekend and ran a 5k in 16:55 (the same time she is credited for running the second half of her 10k). 16:55 is 6th best this year in DIII.
The second place runner in the 10k also had a similar spike in performance at Hillsdale. I can't tell if that should make me more or less suspicious. All the other runners seem to have performed within their capabilities.
Was anybody there? Any chance she ran a lap short? I sincerely hope this was a case of a good athlete having a great race. I don't mean to say that she knowingly cheated, but laps get miscount in 10ks all the time.
