I remember when I heard about him getting shot. I assumed at first he was up to no good. Fortunately he was not! Anyway, it is so good to see such a great and talented young man keep fighting for his dreams.

I would give him a pass on that expression (although it would have been a better - compromised post without it). Clearly it took him a long time to get to this point, that many expected that he might, and his long-term potential is probably reduced, although his internal motivation might make the final outcome higher than otherwise.
