2.5 wind, so this equates to about a 19.9mid with no wind.

Bawsiness
I'm a huge Tyson fan, but this is not that encouraging. a few years back he opened his season with a wind legal 19.5x
I would have liked to see him closer to that considering his 9.86 opener.
Then again it is his first 200 in a while so let's see what happens.

You know, it's funny. He looks 40 and has been around long enough that I forget that he's "only" 30. What age did Lewis stay competitive til?
Just get to worlds and run 9.7 and 19.6 and see what happens.

Are you kidding?
This seems really good to me. He runs 19.79 in his 2nd 200 since 2010 and you are upset???
The year he opened in 19.58 at adidas was a year he didn't even end up running the 200 at Worlds as I assume he was injured. That 19.58 was his pb. You don't want to be that sharp this early anyway.
19.79 would get you the bronze at the Olympics. I think he's doing just fine for May 11th.
19.32 gold, 19.44 silver, 19.84 got bronze.

He's gotta get rid of that limp leg.
Anybody dissappointed is either a troll or an idiot who knows very little about track and field. 19.79 in early May in the pro world is amazing, bordering on "ahead of schedule". For me, I'm just hoping that this is a sign of greater things to come and that his ceiling for the season is nowhere in sight.
Who is his coach by the way?
Lance Brauman
have the jamaicans started sharing the secret sauce recipe?
Good to see Tyson back at it. I hope he has a great season!

Rojo making sense for a change
The 19.58 was a one-off race when Tyson was also in the best shape of his life.
That doesn't make a 19.79 BAD. Other than when he was healthy in 2009, this is the best shape that Tyson has ever been in at this point in the year.
Until Bolt gets back in championship shape and as long as Blake as injured.. Tyson is the best sprinter on the planet, for now. He's running well enough at this point to make one wonder whether a repeat of Osaka is possible..
A big tailwind can do wonders for your 200m time.
A windy 19.80 is no great shakes, even this time of the year. It is marginally, and not significantly, better than others who have already run, like Ashmeade.
The important thing is how he looked in doing it--was he pushing hard? Did he break form? Did he let up? How were the first and second halves balanced? Was he racing anyone, or running alone?
Gay is known for never going halfway--he might ease up a bit before a finish, but even then, he doesn't pull up, he just relaxes and runs just about as fast as he would going full-out. I'm guessing this was pretty much a true reflection of his current capability.
BUT, 200m is an event that you can "get fit for", to a greater extent than the 100m. The 100m just happens, and if you miss it, you are done, unless you can finish like Gay. The 200m is a race that evolves a little bit, and that involves a bit of pacing, and for which the energy system can really be trained to good effect.
This is certainly a good time for this point in the season, and I wouldn't really want to see anything faster--but he is essentially only as fast as Ashmeade right now.
Speaking of Ashmeade, he just ran a very windy 9.91 100m in Clermont, in the prelims. He didn't run the final, I have no idea why not, I hope he's not injured.
Did Clermont FINALLY fix their crappy wind gauge? FINALLY we get windy readings for essentially everybody, +3.8 in Ashmeade's case.
I called Ashmeade a long time ago, when he ends up delivering this season I will dredge up those old threads. I hope this will be his time, and I hope that he gets to run some 100's, in addition to his main event the 200m.
As far as Gay goes, the MOST important thing right now is that he is staying close to home, sleeping, eating, and training properly, and NOT GETTING INJURED. Gay, Ashmeade, and a few others seem to be putting together the best season trajectories so far.
I've been informally coaching Ty. This is just the beginning. Just wait and see...
I'd like to see Gay win the world champs.
It's not as much that I'm anti-Gatlin or anti-Bolt as it is that I'm pro-Gay. I think he's diligent and really has his stuff together. He's clearly more than just a physical talent, his savvy contributes to his success.
I didn't say I was upset, I said that a 19.9 adjusted isn't THAT encouraging, especially considering his 9.86 opener.
Tyson is a guy who we all know is 19.3x capable. He should be able to run 19.9 in his sleep. Not to mention that if he runs less than a tenth slower for an adjusted 20.00, everyone would be wondering what went wrong.
Don't be dazzled by any time under 20 guys. The world record is freaking 19.19! Merritt ran sub 20 and he would have zero shot at a medal in the 200.
Like I said, 19.9 is a good time, but hardly any indicator of Gay having a record season. His 9.86 is a much better sign, and given that and his past quick openers I would have expected at least a wind legal 19.70 or so.
Remember I'm a huge fan. I want nothing more than to take down Bolt but let's be realistic about this performance as it stands: it's far from special. That being said I wouldn't be surprised to see him pop a a 19.60 next time around, but he'll need way better than that to take down Bolt.
