Cool stuff, thanks for sharing. Read the Sports Illustrated article when it came out and actually have kept it and re-read it a few times. Flo'da if you are from Florida I'm a Jaw'ja boy (Georgia) and there is an interesting side note to this race for me. As a kid I qualified for the GA State track meet three times in the early 80's. In the meet program they listed some of the past greats in every event and the one I always remembered was the then fastest mile and 2 mile runner in state history, one Ralph King, with his marks being set in the mid 70's. I always wondered what he went on to do. If you listen and/or read what you have shared you'll see that second place in this race was none other than Mr. King! Pretty good for a state that has never been known for producing distance runners. The article mentions that Moorcroft was so far ahead that Ralph briefly thought he had won the race as he assumed David was a rabbit and had dropped out! Good memories!!

It's really cool when local things break out onto the world scene (especially in states like Florida and Georgia which aren't known for their distance runners...I love OAR if you're wondering haha)
Either way I looked up Ralph King after your post and found this:

Rono was in that race and ran 13:24 the night before in Stockholm.

He ran 1:46.6 800 before that WR. Who knows how fast he'd of run with today's rabbits, I think first lap of WR was a 67.

I don't think he could OF run anything. He may HAVE run faster with rabbits, but we'll never know.
Nobody ever OF run anything.
I thought Rono had run 13:08.97 the night before in Stockholm (3rd best at the time I think). I think he ran 13:24 in this race.
Moorcroft trained and raced in the USA during Oct 1981 thru spring of 1982. During that period he put in a lot of aerobic miles and raced on the roads.
Nov 1981 Bull Run 10 km Tampa(on USF campus) first place,Ray Flynn ran also.
Spring 1982 won Recco run in Cleveland.
Would like results from these races and any training Moorcroft did during this build up to his 5km WR.
