The new model of the Gel DS Trainer doesn't fit me and I can't find the old one in my size. What am I supposed to do?

Mizuno Elixir. In my opinion, it is a better shoe all around. More durable, less boxy, more streamlined, yet still a little bit stable. I wore the DS Trainer until they introduced that awful heel clutch a few versions ago. I switched to the Elixir and haven't looked back.

Oh nice. Only 5 left though, I don't think that's a sustainable solution. Eventually I will not be able to find them.

Wasn't a huge fan of the Elixir, didn't feel right, but I appreciated the suggestion. I picked up two pairs of shoes to try out (chances are since I'm a girl and these are both really pretty, if only one doesn't work I'll just wear it around as a normal shoe):

Asics GT 2000 (basically the same as the Gel DS but a little more support and a little heavier)

Asics Gel Lyte33 (probably too minimal for me but I wanted to try it out)

I think I'll wear the GT 2000 next run and hopefully they will be good. I think I am too used to the way Asics feel nice and cozy. I honestly wanted to leave with another brand because I'm pissed at Asics, but it didn't happen.

I also liked the Adizero Tempos. I didn't buy them but I'd be willing to try them.

If neither work out I guess I'll order 5 pairs of DS Trainer 17s and hope that the 19s work for me. Or something.

look into the new balance 870v2 or the brooks ravenna. Both have a similar stability posts to the ds trainer and are also pretty close in weight.

I had the Ravenna for a while. I want to like it because of its name, but it did not work for me at all. I love Brooks, but I have never had any luck with any of their trainers, only their flats and spikes.

Keep checking ebay on a continual basis. Seems like there are more mens shoes than womens shoes usually though when it comes to older versions.

I can guarantee you that Asics won't bring back the heel clutch thing. Pretty much everyone hated it. I'm not sure if that's the only thing that changed but I'm guessing these shoes have changed for good. The couple of versions before that (the 14's and 15's), now those were some good shoes. Impossible to find now though. Also, the new DS trainer is ugly as sin. I know most runners don't give a shit about things like that but holy god. The mens ones are worse than the womens but come on...

I think you'll notice the GT 2000 will seem much heavier. They aren't that much heavier, but it just looks/feels bulkier.

I've switched to the tempos and worn them for 7 or 8 pairs now. It's a slightly different feel but it's the same type of shoe. I'd recommend those.

Yeah it wasn't the heel clutch. 16s were great too. 18s have a different fit, aggravate bunionettes I haven't felt in years, really just feel like they are suffocating my feet.

Buy all 5. That should buy you some serious time.

Last time I tried to gradually transition into "barefoot" shoes (years ago, when I first started running, and when the fad was just beginning) I got a stress fracture that totally ruined any shot I had a collegiate career. So joke or no joke, no thanks. I like shoes.

Try the Asics Noosa-Tri. Every year stores are going to "upgrade" their shoes, and you're never going to find a sustainable supply of the 17s. Eventually any store will run out simply because they will stop making them.

im running in the elixir 8, probably my favorite shoe of all time.

I guess I'll give an update though. I've been running comfortably in the GT-2000s even though they are a bit bulkier. I also really liked the Adizero Tempos but I didn't go with them because I was too used to the way Asics feel. I'm not sure if I regret that decision, but I'm still healthy and strong so I guess I'll stick with these for now. Not going to fix what isn't broken.

been in the same predicament as you since the ds trainer 13s {so good!} and have been struggling to find a comparable replacement. i've raced marathons in ds trainer 16s for the past 4 years {good luck shoe} and have been training in ds trainers 17s {i horde them from ebay}. have tried ds trainer 19s, but they are a bit too low + light, so i use them for short races. and i did not like the 15s, 18s or 20s {my bunionettes!}. i agree, gt-2000s are too bulky, too much stability for my needs.

so happy to have found this thread that confirms the shifts in the model... i've tried on other brands {brooks, mizuno, new balance}, but it just doesn't fit like an asic {i have have skinny feet + bunions}. i've heard the noosas are pretty much the ds trainer, but the design is just so damn ugly + loud.

i recently purchased nike zoom elite 8s, but they are front heavy with a low drop, better for tempos + sprints {not unlike newtons, would probably get injured if i used them for long distance, but cozy fit}. i used to think the pegasus was decent, but i also feel like that model has changed recently as the drop doesn't feel the same {too low/flat, like ds trainer 19s, though it does fit snug}.
