This is the correct answer. When you have an addiction, you'll do miserable things to service that addiction. In a very real way, your life isn't yours anymore. Getting your life back takes MAJOR effort, and many times, outside intervention/help.
I speak as the adult son of an alcoholic who watched his father literally drink himself into an early grave. Was he miserable? Absolutely, but as you say, he was serving his master of addiction. He refused to get help until it killed him.
