What is the appeal of sitting in a smoky bar or pub in the middle of the day?

Alcohol. I thank God every day that I don't drink anymore.

There's a certain class of women that hang out in such places that some men may be interested in.

There is no "appeal" to doing what you describe. It is done to serve a master - addiction.

Not necessarily addiction, although that happens to some people. More commonly just because life is shi t and being drunk is better than being sober.

Yeah, it seems like an incredibly sad place to be with other incredibly sad people. The thing is whatever is causing the problem will not be helped by sitting in a bar/pub. Why spend your time doing something that is just soooo negative?

I'm far from a teetotaler I drink, but I drink socially and when Im having fun. If Im depressed the last thing I want is to get drunk.

I don't get it, either. Drinking home alone is much cheaper.

Not everyone who goes to a bar in the afternoon is a alcoholic...some are lonely and just nurse a beer or two and meet with friends and talk sports, politics, women, currents events etc.

The appeal is the friendly banter between patrons and the bartender. It is far more social and healthy than just sitting behind your computer posting on a message board or on social media. It is nice to be around people and have real conversations. It is fun to get a bit tipsy.

Plus all bars are smoke free in my state now.

Exactly. The last time I sat in a bar midday was with a Vietnam Vet who had just sailed through the Straits of Gibraltar and across the Atlantic. We drank Belikins and talked. Mostly I listened to his stories.

That is less healthy than reading a message board where every other post is idiots arguing about paleo diet and telling lies about their bench press?

This is the correct answer. When you have an addiction, you'll do miserable things to service that addiction. In a very real way, your life isn't yours anymore. Getting your life back takes MAJOR effort, and many times, outside intervention/help.

I speak as the adult son of an alcoholic who watched his father literally drink himself into an early grave. Was he miserable? Absolutely, but as you say, he was serving his master of addiction. He refused to get help until it killed him.

I washed dishes in a scummy place in the pacific northwest that had a diner, bar and restaurant all connected. Mostly elderly, disabled, unemployed and blue collar workers on their breaks would drink their during the day. It was so dark you couldn't see much in front of you in certain parts of the bar. I would put in 10 hours days about 5 days a week in the kitchen and bar backing. After a few months the dehydrated, old, heavy-breathed owner pulled me aside and asked me what a guy like me was doing working in a place like this. He thought I was casing the joint or I was a figitive. I didn't have a great answer and I ended up quitting not too longer after that for a decent job, realizing it was a sh&thole and even the owner knew so himself.

You went to the wrong bar my friend. The correct bar is the one where hot women are up on a stage taking off all their clothes. These establishments are traditionally labeled Titty bars and once you have been to one you are a MAN. The only thing better than going to a titty bar is going back. Looking at naked women while getting drunk is what makes America a great place to be.

Why is it an incredibly sad place? What if it's a nice pub or bar (and non-smoking - don't know if in the USA all your bars are non-smoking).

My guess is boredom though. People probably go in cos they're bored.

This is the one place where, if only for an hour or two, the patrons aren't blatantly reminded that Obama is destroying the country.

You hit the nail on the head. Addiction is a MF. I can see no reason to frequent a bar on a 2-3 4 days a week, unless I've got a love interest working there that I want to be around, otherwise let's get out of the denial you're an alcoholic
