Ah gotcha.
Keep in mind, the 3:57 was pretty early season and I think was faster than the other summit runners at that time.
Hard to say what the deal is, could be an issue with the new coach or training style, misplaced loyalty or flakiness. I would assume someone is working with him though as he is running in some of the oregon meets. (relays, twilight). Could be he would be fine in a program but knows the current one isn't a fit, could be a head case.
When I was running in high school years ago, we had a good runner and a really really bad distance track coach. He decided to just take a season off Track and not risk getting injured. A smart move as 3 folks did get injured. He did some strong road races etc. but ended up drifting away from running after that (I think missing the camaraderie of the team)
Hopefully it all works out as he does seem to be a talented runner.
