I was there, and he looked smooooooth. Wariner is BACK
I wouldn't put TOO much stock in this. 43.8 on a relay is obviously a fantastic time, but it doesn't necessarily mean that the Jeremy Wariner of yesteryear is back.
Still, it's a good time and it's good to see he's in good shape (especially this early in the season) and I hope he has a fantastic season.
Thanks for the update coach d!
He is back he dominated indoor nats like it was nothing. I know the comp was lacking but still, talent never goes away.
43.8 means he's in about 44.5 shape at best.
He's not back, he's where he was in 2011 and maybe at one short point last year. After each instance he got hurt and was gone for the rest of the season.
Yes, but I am a big time D1 coach and I say he is back.

Gay ran in the high 45's and Wariner didn't run any faster than maybe 44.5.
Don't listen to the tools on Flotrack.
So that's like a 45.0 open 400. Not that impressive.

Particularly if he ran it....which he didn't.

What time did he run? Oh, that's right, you didn't time it. But you know that those who did got it wrong? How so?

The MAN who could beat Rudisha to the sub 1:40 800!!! Let's go Jeremy- between you and Symmonds the 800 could be the coolest race is track.
This speed bodes well for his 800m career.
Wariner is only 29. MJ was 31 when he ran the WR. Let's see what he does in Moscow first though..

Who says I didn't time it?
...he still has 4+ months until world championships....its not like he was peaking for this meet so one could say he is on the right track
Wariner is skinny, weak, and probably undisciplined.
Johnson was not skinny, was not weak, and was very disciplined.
Huge differences between both. Wariner just doesn't have the speed MJ had, so for him to run the same times he was running at 23-24 y/o he's going to have to get fast again and hope his strength will carry him back into the 43's.

I would put Gay's lead off at low 45, a standing start and handing off near the top of the zone. The relay was at 1:29 after the second leg which mean Gay and Wariner had to average a high 44.
Wariner ran a 4x100 leg at the Texas Relays a couple weeks ago and looked pretty fast full speed, I would say he can still run 10.6 at the worst in a 100.

Maybe. d and Flo'da, how did he look? Was he running with confidence? Could he have gone faster? How was his form down the finishing straight? How did he look after the race?
Flo'da, I know you said he looked smooth, but did he look strong?
I hope he's back, although like other posters, I don't think this performance is determinative.
What's more interesting to me is Gay's 45.3 Remember a couple of seasons ago when he opened in a 44.89? Well, to be only .4 off that is pretty darn good, but I'm glad to see that he didn't put up some sort of smoking 400 time--because to me, that would mean that he would be relatively weaker at the 100. I hope he's been practicing his starts/accels more, instead of his 400's. SE and top-end speed he has never had a problem with. He has matched Bolt in that department in, for instance, the 9.58 From watching vids, it looks like almost the entirety of Bolt's advantage was gained between 10-50m
Of course, his start/accel isn't actually bad, but if he wants to be #1, he should focus on it, not on 400 fitness.
