My times were a few minutes faster than 1:06 and 2:19. I did the half once and the full once, but did lots of 5ks and 10ks. My VO2max was less than 70. I never thought that I could be elite because I trained with truly elite guys and realized how much better they were than I could ever be. So, yes, I have a very good idea what it takes to be elite. I tried two mountain races, the Golden Leaf trail run in Aspen and the Creede mountain race. I easily won both and remember that there were plenty of mountain runners there, but no other guys in the 29-32 minute range.
I think that anybody who does 1:06 or 2:19 is a serious runner, but nowhere near elite. It seems to me that what most of these people here are pointing out is that an average sub-elite runner trained at altitude could easily dominate the mountain running scene. Nobody here is making personal attacks on MC or Jornet. They are simply pointing out that these guys have found a little niche where they can get a lot of publicity and maybe make a little cash without having to face stiff competition.
My question to you is why are you being so paranoid and defensive? The old lady next door sits on her porch all day, so you could say that she is dominant at that. Is it a great accomplishment?
