Wondered how long it would take for Martin Smith to ruin Casey, stupid racing him so much at conference, worst coaching decision I have seen in a while.

Wasn't Lawi Lalang a Freshman last year? Now he's a Junior?
Wrong. He was a junior in XC last year. Sophomore in track.

I meant the year he wo (2011). He was listed as a freshman according to the results:
http://www.flotrack.org/article/9216-2011-NCAA-Mens-Individual-ResultsSo he should be a sophomore now. I guess his studies are really coming along nicely.
Lalang competed in indoor and outdoor track in 2011 and 2012, so he has junior eligibility for both. He either redshirted the 2010 cross season, or didn't show up in Tucson until January, 2011.

It is not a real surprise that there are a dozen teams under 9:32 -- look at the number of sub-4 milers, sub 1:50 800 guys, and sub-48 400 guys. Put them together in a manner that keeps all of the teams running mainly together and you have a hell of a race.
I guess they thought they would not get bumped. I infer you don't think they should have stood pat. Coaches mistake?
College miling is hot now we'll see the 400th American under 4 minutes soon--- I think the list is at 396.
Took 15 years from 1 to 50 another 8 to 100, 100 to 200 & 200 to 300 both took about 14 and 300 to 400 will be done in five.
You ask a good question with the right inference (I lean towards thinking that they should have raced. Ex post, they probably should have run.
However, ex ante (i.e., before we knew the outcome), it was reasonable to assume that they might get bumped. However, whether is was a good gamble to make or not would depend on things I do not know:
Are all of the guys ready to run at that point?
Will racing that hard hurt them next week and being one of the few to not go all out would give them an advantage?
Remember a couple of years ago when this race brought in a lot of teams that last week and they DMR was over-full, if I remember correctly. It seemed like the teams that qualified in that scramble did rather poorly at the NCAA meet. Of course, the adjustment for the track was not very large than and is a bigger handicap now. If you apply the new factors, some of those teams that last-minute race might not have made the cut.
Heat sheets?
