It was nice to talk with Bob Schul...
I didn't think Arnold was going to fire the gun since Bob was there. btw, Arnold was 3-4 minutes late. Still worth it.
I've been to the pump and run. You have to sign up in October, which stinks because you really don't know what could happen injury wise during those 5 months.
I personally wouldn't go back. I'm a good runner with solid strength. I can do 30 reps of my own weight and have ran 14:30 5k in college. However, being in that type of running shape/lifting shape at the same time isn't that easy. You tend to lose muscle running 70 mile weeks.
Anyway, the weekend is more dedicated to the sports expo...which in my opinion was a freak show. In the morning, the bench pressing takes place before the race. It wasn't bad, however, alot of guys bounce the weight off chest like crazy. Nothing was said when I was there.
Now, the race, I thought wasn't that great. Once Arnold finally shows up with his gang (after you are freezing for a good 10min wait), you run the course and finish with no idea what place you actually took. Unless you win the race and did 30 reps, you don't know until hours later.
It was a cool event to be part of...but once is enough for me.
Agree. They need more structure. And definitely more discipline regarding the 5k. I have no idea why there is no award ceremony afterwards... only race I've ever been to with no awards (even other pump and runs do, at the very least, overall awards).
I think they should stager start. everyone with 30 reps goes at the gun. 29 reps goes 30 seconds later, etc etc.
I agree. That would take a lot of planning but the first person to cross the line would be the winner. Right now you cross and don't know till hours after how you did. Most local racers offer prizes for top three in each age group. I think this race only offers top three overall. With all the fitness companies in town I'm sure it wouldn't be to tough to get a sponsor or two to throw some prizes to the winners.
why would Matt offer awards, that takes $$ out of his pocket. He makes more $$ from that race than a whole year of teaching.
has the 5k changed for this year's event?
What do you predict for the winning time?
Also, what is the fasted 5k recorded for the pump & run?
Some sort of award ceremony is warranted. Even if it's just for the overall winners. Maybe Arnold can congratulate them?
Yes, they need to be strict on the lifting. Marines can give little pep talk to whomeever they are spotting prior to the lift about the rules. 30 seconds and it would def help: "controlled lifts, but on bench, no bouncing, completely lock arms, etc" I've seen some videos posted to the internet and theres illegal form with no consequences.
Additionally, maybe there should be a "seeded" section of the race for anyone that hits 30 lifts?
Will someone go sub 1 this year?
Just because you are a marine, doesn't mean you know how to correctly bench, they can do cheater push ups all days though.
They want to get the hell out of there asap, so they get you in/out. They are not going to argue if you did 30 or 27, trust me they will not admit their mistake if they miscount or claim you are bouncing.
The pump/run is a ego race....period, well actually a huge payday for the RD too
agreed. although there's no need to state the obvious... There's plenty of ego in EVERY race
Good
Well organized
Course- spectator friendly
Consistent product- you know exactly what this race will deliver
Becoming more competitive
Bad
Same freaking cotton Tshirt every year
Lame top 3 prizes- Muscle magazine and ANOTHER Tshirt. Really?!
Easy to cheat bench
Silly age handicap
No way of knowing at end of race who won
I propose:
No age handicap. Just have an over 40 category.
40 sec off first 10 reps, 20 seconds off for next 10 reps, 10 sec off next 10, 5 sec off next 10, 2 sec off next 10, 1 sec per rep above that.
Staggered start based on number of reps completed
An age group runner will never win the overall race anyway since they can't hang with the faster/younger runners.
What meathead wouldn't want to cheat a few lifts and run a hard 2.9 miles? The race is already sold out for 2014.
I think the record is 1:02 from a few years ago.
it's a USATF certified 5K
13 Days... Anyone going to crack 1:00?
I now have about 16 of these sweet cotton t shirts. They are as comfortable as steal wool and are a great rag for chores around the house.
The top three don't get a subscription to Muscle Magazine. All they get is another t shirt. I wonder how much he pays per t shirt?
See you in 13 days!
Below is the pathetic email. It's either a mad scramble to throw together information or they just DON'T CARE. Even small/local 5K's show enthusiasm when corresponding with participants.

that course was awful... got even worse for the pump & run 5k
By my calculations the course was about 61 sec slow yesterday. Many people did not show because of the weather. The winner was clearly stronger then all the others. He put 1:10 on me and would have gone sub 16 if it was dry.
364 day to go!
