before saying why Rupp doesn't jump into this, the question really is why Lagat doesn't jump into this.
My prediction: Bumbalough or Derrick for the AR and Lopez starts to kick when it is 3 to go.

1. There are no indoor world championships this year.
2. No 5K at the US championships
3. You can't qualify for Outdoor World's via a 3K, but you can with an indoor 5K.
4. Getting outkicked by Bernard Lagat in a 8:10 3K is a complete waste of time for anyone in the group.
5. A time trail 5K is a perfect way for them to evaluate their fitness following their stint at altitude and avoid unfavorable conditions associated with early outdoor races.
Conclusion: Schumacher is smarter than you.

I was wondering about several of them rabbiting. It is not uncommon for Wisconsin to do this at home meets indoor (which tend to be low-key) and aimed at getting someone a qualifying mark for for one of the second-tier (but pretty strong for that) guys with the stars rabbiting for workout/pacing training as well as rabbiting.

hey, cool @ sign in the title. I really enjoyed that one
I just still can't get over their use of the @ sign in the title. WAY COOL!!
getting out kicked by lagat isn't a waste of time. it just means they comparably suck if they cant beat him running team tactics.

This is a non sequitur. I did not question Schumacher's methods, strategies, intentions, or intelligence, nor did I compare his mental facilities to mine. I was questioning LetsRun's excitement for the event vs. their "What About the Sport" stance.

A very fair point. One of the big problems in track is no one is in charge and it's total free-agency for everyone involved.
I like this race because the track and xc guys will be racing each other. I dislike it because it's at a last chance meet. But it's better than the alternatives of no race (Jerry's guys race very infrequently) or an over-sized track race.
For the record, we are also covering the US indoor champs.

It amazes me how if we start a thread with a link, lots of people people will never read our article but start typing as if they were experts on the subject matter:
In our article, LetsRun wrote:
Dan Huling and Travis Mahoney will pace and the goal is to go through 3000 in 7:55 (13:11.67 pace) so someone would have to ram it down from their to get the AR, particularly if the rabbit hits 7:55 and the field his 7:56-7.

Rojo, thanks for the response. Your points are fair also, particularly the one where at least they are racing. Beggars can't be choosers.

so, you are not agreeing that they are racing instead of the originally stated time trial exhibition?
You weren't expecting a reply were you?
Lagat is going to USA Indoors. He's already had a pretty active indoor season. He beat Bumbalough and Jager in that Millrose 2-mile. No reason he should come back, and I'm 100 percent that's not what Schumacher would be interested in anyway.

Good catch! Maybe I should say that they are participating in their chosen profession in a public venue.
Daaaaaaaaaaaaang!
will this stream for free on their youtube channel or does flotrack have the rights?

That's not the problem. The problem is that there's no incentive for them to run the US Champs. Since when is freedom of choice a problem?
Kind of strange.
Schumacher does this each year, at the last minute we hear about several of his guys running a low profile race. I bet the purpose of this is to get the WC standard out of the way so that his guys can train heavy late into the spring.
An American title is not worthless. They are all in excellent shape, however, and it would be valuable if they all got the worlds qualifier out of the way, and of course that would help Jerry indulge his no-racing strategy all the way up to World's with just the one compulsory event at USA outdoors. What is funny, though, is that he's letting Jager run a 5000m indoors for a qualifier when he wouldn't let him go for sub 13 after Olympics last year.
Interested in seeing how fit these guys are right now...
