He's not exactly "injured", but he says that he has a "cranky" quad and wants to stay near his PT. He will finish up his Boston training in CA and will travel to Africa before a fall marathon.

Improved PED testing in Kenya an issue?
The quad issue is the same injury that forced him to drop out of the Olympics.

Exactly
Which is why he has chosen to remain in the much more WADA-Accessible United States
I hate to say it because I like the guy but age has seemed to become a factor with Mr. Hall. It could be his peak years have passed. I hope I am wrong.

Exactly, so now there is no sense in going to Kenya.

This has NOTHING to do with age. He had this quad injury before the Olympics - trained anyway which made the injury worse, dropped out of the Olympics.
The problem with Hall is his inability to skip a big money race, rest and then adapt to a new training program with a new coach.
Boston DNS or DNF coming up?
How much of the race does he need to run to get his appearance fee?

You just need to start the race.
I'd expect a DNF finish at Boston.
Loss of coordination in leg!!!!?????
That's exactly what I was thinking when I read the article! Would be great to have some more insight on what the exact problem is and whether he is having co-ordination/loss of power issues!

Probably sciatica. Very common symptoms.

He probably realized there was no point in going now since it may not be the drug safe haven it has been the last few decades.
On the bright side, he can continue taking his thyroid meds without issue.
Ryan has not been at or near 100% health at any point in this marathon buildup. I don't know how a race like Boston protects its investment, but my money says that Ryan will in no way be prepared to race there.
Not exactly true...appearance fees structures are more complex. There are provisions for starting, finishing, finishing in a certain time, etc. this is why it was so hard to figure out what was fair to give the NYC marathon runners. Lets say an appearance fee is $50,000, 15 of that might be guaranteed for showing up and starting, but the rest is contingent on placing 10th or higher or running sub 2:12. And it is different with every athlete

Why all the drug questions about Hall? He's the one elite athlete I've never doubted was clean. The guy has so much religious commitment that he was only running 6 days a week due to his respect for the sabbath. Seems to me if he was wanting to do something to get ahead of other athletes, he'd skip the sabbath and run 7 days a week before he'd take any PED's. The guy trained at altitude for years. Is there really a need for EPO if you live and train at altitude?
Not ready to run with the big boys!

The 2 marathon a year theory seems to be widely accepted, but in fact there are plenty of runners - Bill Rodgers, Meb, Kawauchi, who seem to do fine on more than 2 a year. I don't think overracing is Hall's problem anyway.

Didn't he skip the Chicago Marathon? Didn't he skip the Philadelphia Distance Run just a year or two ago?
I'm still waiting on my 41st Day signed poster.
