You thought wrong. From the letsrun front page: "Update: According to Rupp's agent and the meet director, Galen was still scheduled to run; other athletes and the 2nd rabbit pulled out and the 5k was cancelled because organizers wanted an entertaining race for TV and fans."
But I'm sure it was Rupp's fault, somehow

+1
Should be interesting, but let it be official that he's ducking the millrose games now. I can't think of another reason for him not to do that.
So Rupp is going for Lagat's 3000 meter record on the same day that Lagat is going for Rupp's 2 mile record. There is something wrong with this picture. These guys should be racing each other.

Agreed. They'll end up dodging each other until US championships/world championships when they can't.

Millrose is Saturday. Rupp's race is next Thursday but I understand your point.
In a better world, Rupp would have flown to Millrose to race Lagat.
But that's not reality: a) $$$$$ talk b) neither athlete wants to get get beat and c) jet lag if Galen was already in Europe

Nice of the meet directory to make such an elaborate cover story for Rupp needing more Thyroid medication.
Rupp and Lagat broke each other's indoor records on the same day last year.
Here's Rupp's post race interview of his 2 mile record while being told Lagat just took his 5000 record.
And here is Lagat talking about getting his 5000 record back from Rupp as Rupp goes after Lagat's 2 mile record.
This was before the race.

Just when I think your posts can't get more ridiculous you deliver. Thank you for your wonderful viewpoint.

This is what I suggested on another thread. Rupp was already in Europe. Stockholm was the only available high-level meet in a reasonable timeframe. So that he would go there (if healthy) was duh-level obvious.
Also, isn't Mo running a 3000 as well? I suppose Rupp doesn't get to race that because he's in better track shape than Mo and Mo is supposed to win in front of the British fans, a little bit more understandable.

rupp winning this race with c. ndiku, a. rop and steeple great paul k. koech is not a given, these guys are the same level as lagat, lagat should win, but jager could push him.
https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=10151423097059710&id=260571864709why would rupp not race lagat and then enter a race in which there are 3 people capable of running at lagats level?
rupp has the same chance losing this race as he would to lagat.
From this article about Yohan Blake and Usain Bolt not frequently racing each other:
"The people who are always thinking there should be head-to-heads nine months of the year don't really understand athletics. The athletes have to use races to get into shape for the major championships. They will very rarely have big head-to-heads before the major championships.
"It makes the major championships even more valuable. That's why the Olympics is so special. If we do this every week it will devalue the big day."
---------------------------------------------
Usain Bolt has said that it's not good for the sport if he continually races Yohan Blake all the time and Abubaker Kaki has said the same about racing Rudisha all the time.
Rupp isn't ducking Lagat. He's in a world class field that is much better than the field at Millrose. If anything, Lagat should go race over with Rupp instead of winning easy competition in the US. Even if Lagat would win the race Rupp is in, it wouldn't have been as easy for him.
Plus, though I'd love to be proven wrong, I don't think Lagat is going to break the American Record. Not because he's not in the shape because he clearly is, but because he typically doesn't push the pace by himself if he's in the lied. I'm predicting the Rabbit probably won't make it to a mile on pace and that after he drops out Lagat will probably slow it down and then just outkick the field to a time of high 8:10's/low 8:20's.
That's just my prediction, I'd love to be proven wrong though. Either way, Rupp's chance of running faster is greater in his 3000m and even if he didn't get the record, a win over there would be defeating a stronger field. Plus he already has the 2 mile record! If he got it again at Millrose he would just be keeping his record, whereas now he has the chance to come away with another American Record to add to his Resume instead of just breaking his old one (assuming Lagat doesn't get it).
It's probably mostly about $$$.
It's hard for meets to afford the 2 biggest names in American Distance running (on the track).
Also about Bolt and Blake, I can't imagine how much it must cost to have Bolt and Blake in the same race.
Look, jäger can run 8:0x over hurdles over 3k and has a nice 1500 from years ago. He may be a darkhorse here that Lagat should think about. He is on the rise and Lagat is on the descend, slow as it may be. If Lagat gets stuck leading and pushes for the AR but can't shake Jäger he should worry. Didn't the Lincoln hold the former steeple AR before Jäger broke it? Lincoln ran an 8:04 or so 2 mile at Pre didn't he?
I have no idea about Jagers fitness, but his training mates are doing very well. What if Jäger got the AR?
