Well, it's not really a "soft" record for most people, of course. Certainly not soft for any ultra-marathoners, or even anyone on this board. But wouldn't the 50K record be INCREDIBLY soft for someone like Meb or Hall or Ritz?!

And yes, the IAAF does permit multiple world bests to be set at different distances in the same race. For example, the world best for 30K (Peter Cheruiyot Kirui, 1:27:38) was set during the 2011 Berlin Marathon.
http://www.iaaf.org/records/toplists/road-running/30-kilometres/outdoor/men/senior/All%20timeWhy don't you call the wambulance to cry about that record?
There's no wambulance for the 30K world best because the 30K was part of the course of the whole marathon. He didn't run a 10K road race and then run off somewhere and add 20K on a track.
It's simply that Josh Cox should have set the 50K WR in a race greater than or equal to 50K in distance. Not that hard to figure out
Also, those miles added to the end were done on the Sun Angel Stadium MONDO track, I was there. He was in like 15th place, it was PF Chang's in Phoenix, I think 2010. Had everyone in front of him done the same thing, he would have the 15th best 50k.

Josh is a self promoter that has never achieved a thing in the elite circles of the sport. He thinks he is well connected but is laughed at by almost everyone. The 50k was 8k added on a Rock N Roll event. He was the only finisher.
Wrong year brah

Some people are saying that Cox didn't win the marathon; he did:

Here's the rules below. Was it advertised and open for others to enter? They had 5 'entered', even though he's the only one that finished (A race?):

Not sure, but wanted to point out (ok, little off topic..)--Cox at least beat a Kenyan? If so, wow! Carry on.
So are you saying that when someone finishes a marathon, they could just keep on running that same pace for another 5 miles? Try again. He paced himself for a 50K. The guys in front of him paced themselves for a marathon.

Also, wasn't the previous record a set-up race also. I recall someone establishing a short crit course and holding a "race". Anyone remember that?
Yes.
http://www.paloaltoonline.com/weekly/morgue/2002/2002_11_08.runmark.htmlAlex Tilson averaged 5:31.8 overall and 5:39.8 from the marathon to the finish, and he was the only finisher of the race. The article says he had two guys pacing him, but I think only one of them started with him and the other jumped in somewhere along the way after the first guy dropped out.
Certified course - enough said.
I think the record is definitely not legit. He was allowed to finish on a track. A TRACK for a road race. The other 50k courses are all tough ones with turn a rounds and rolling hills.
I'd say maybe Gray who won 50k last year would have a shot at beating Cox on a hilly course but definitely not Wardian (been hurt all year), and even in his prime Cox would have smoked him. Canaday would struggle too being that he is a trail guy so no speed.
"Record-Eligible - Indicates whether records may be set on the course. This depends on drop and separation--see below. Also, records may be set only if the course has Active ("A") certification status and if the race is sanctioned."
Course and race were record-eligible according to the USATF.
Suck it.
