I would add Wetmore but take Hudson off the list. Hudsons only Olympian was Ritz who was an Olympian before Brad and after Brad.
1. Salazar -- Produced a medalist
2. Mahon
3. Wetmore
4. Hansons
5. Jerry
1. Salazar -- Produced a medalist
A World Champ in 10,00k and runner up in the 5k
The double gold 5 and 10k champ and the Silver Medalist in the 10k and Goucher won a bronze in the 10k WC.
LI and Lagat won a WC and have 2 Olympic medals.
You got to add Bill Squires to that list, and Bowerman.
I am talking about CURRENT COACHES.
These suggestions so far indicate a popularity contest. Schumacher/Salazars camps are pretty tight lipped on their training. I would suggest coaches that have been more open about their philosophies.
Jack Daniels is number one, case closed.
Followed by:
Wetmore, Vigil, Bowerman/Dillinger, Lananna.
Wetmore tends to get the most out of the least, relative to his peers at Stanford and Oregon.
Salazar gets medals - enough said. Jerry is close behind, and Jager had a phenomenal year.
Malmo doesn't coach, but I think his SOM heavily influences many runners, especially preps.
Vigil, to my way of thinking, will always be at the top. Everyone has borrowed a piece from him, including the current Adams St. coach. Mahon is a bit of a Vigil protege.
If we're counting coaches who aren't American but have an influence in America, shouldn't Lydiard be on the list, like him or hate him?
I would include Bob Larson on the list.
Um...ever heard of Vin Lananna?
I'll add in Al Carius from North Central College (IL) for having produced 15 team XC titles, numerous individual champions and is well known for turning nobody HS guys into all-americans.
He may not have the olympic qualifiers and whatnot, but for the talent level (DIII) and consistency, I don't think anyone can beat his record at any level.
Key words are "in the US"
1. Salazar- 2 Gold and 1 silver in London. Gold and Silver in Daegu. Bronze in Osaka.
2. Li- Bronze in Sydney. Silver in Edmonton. Silver in Athens. 2 golds in Osaka. Silver and Bronze in Berlin. Silver in Daegu.
3. Cook- Bronze in Beijing. Bronze in Berlin.
4. Ponsoby- Silver in London.
5. Shumacher- Adds a lot of national level depth and has had guys be very competitive at the world stage. Lots of room to grow and just a matter of time before his guys start bringing home medals. Jager?
I based this off of how well coaches based in the US have had athletes perform in the WCs and OGs. Li is arguably better than Salazar but he has just has one world beater snagging medals instead of multiple like Salazar. Boaz Lalang is really the only other world class runner for Li although Lawi has the potential. I am also not positive about the Ponsoby/Cook situation. Is Ponsoby coaching Leo alone or is Cook involved?
Medals are by far the most influential thing in the sport.
in my earlier post, I knew I was forgetting someone (Jack Daniels).
here is my adjusted list:
Lydiard and Daniels by far - their influence on distance running is insane. the majority of coaches will cite either one of their training plans and they are very familiar among elites and the RW masses
Canova - has a big cult following on letsrun and the masses have some familarity with his training approach
Salazar - for explaining the realities about elite level training.
Malmo - another one of those who has his training plans being referenced.
As for people being discussed on here
Larson: a good portion of the masses who know Meb are the bandwagon type person and won't even check into who his coach is.
Wetmore/Hansons/Vigilante/Lanana: these coaches are respected for the way they are bringing out world class athletes, but the masses aren't too familiar with them
Schumacher/Mahon: LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
Hudson/Cook: ??????????
Li: the masses have zero clue as to who he is, and those who follow the sport really hate him.
Who hates Li? I don't know him personally but he seems like a really good guy.
Greg McMillan?
Brian Mackenzie should be included.
I'm surprised LRC insiders haven't put Kellogg and Warhurst on the list.
Salazar
Vigil
Jerry
Bob Larson
Hanson's
The one's I'm most familiar of because of the athletes they've coached and their popular books are:
Salazar
Schumacher
Daniels
Hudson
Wetmore
Other influential ones are definitely:
Gags
Cook
Mahon
Vigilante
Lananna
Li
Wetmore
Salazar
Schumacher
Gags
Cook
I think Daniels is overrated.
