Really?
How exactly do you get there then, run 13:19 when you're born already or what.

It used to be that races was settled over the last 400 meters, from the bell etc.
The Gebrselassie and Bekele signature move was to move to the front with 600 to go and not let anyone pass (plus kick like hell if needed).
Salazar/Farah/Rupp has made it their signature move to move to the front with 800 to go and not let anyone pass.
This new Ethiopian moved to the front with 1000 and did not let anyone pass.
Do you see where I'm going with this or do I need to draw you a picture? ;-)
Yes, the ghost of pre returns to lead all races from the bell. NO. Gebrehiwet's tactic here was nothing like Bekele's or Farah's.
Gebrehiwet put a gap on Rupp and maintained it. The point was to pull away and stay away.
In contrast, the point of Bekele or Farah moving to the front from 600-800 out in slow races is opposite. (Centrowitz did this in the mile in Boston as well).
The point there is that in a slow race, you want to be in the best position to kick. You're not trying to gap anyone, you're just in the best spot to kick as long as nobody gets around you and boxes you in. Then you keep it slow until people start trying to pass you, and you pick it up just enough to keep them in lane 2. With 200 to go or so (or 400 if you're bekele and you're dominant) you actually start trying to pull away. Until then, you're in a perfect spot to respond to moves and you run the least distance and in a straight line.
i just read 'won of' the most poorly written thread titles i've ever seen.
This kid is a great runner and he is smart. Lydiard once said that in every race there is a moment of hesitation. A great runner can sense that make a decisive move. This kid made the move at that moment and held on for the win. Rupp, as good as he is, was not ready for this move this early. He thought the kid would come back. Sometimes they don't.

Clearly Rupp seems to have been locked into a race plan and was not going to alter his pace whatever move someone else made. The bottom line for Rupp is that he finished just outside the AR so it was a good performance on his part.
I think there is some truth to this. It reminded me a bit of Rupps race when he went for the 10000 AR and everyone knew it going in. They all knew what Rupp would do and Rupp pretty much had to stick to that plan at that point while the others could sit in behind and wait.
Few people can understand the added weight of carrying that into a race, especially two weeks in a row. The fact that they are talking about it to the media is probably not the best thing for Rupp on a micro scale, but it is great for the sport so I really respect that. In the end Rupp will take all of these in stride and use it to get better as always.
I'm looking forward to worlds this year, heck I may even get my passport ready. USAs are going to be brutal just with the guys coming out of the two Portland groups trying to secure spots.

Agreed - it is extremely embarrassing. I had just finished a 20 miler before watching the women's 2 mile and men's 3k at Boston, if that's any consolation for my atrocious phrasing.

Ngugi moved to the front with 4000 to go and didn't let anyone pass.
Gebrhiwet looks like a 40 year old man. The age cheating is getting out of control...
Tariku Bekele did this move to Mottram a few years ago at the World Indoor championships. Its nothing new. Ngugi took off in the Olympic 5000 as well.
I think we are all too used to watching Diamond League 5000s where it is the same race every time (rabbits hammer the pace, pack slows down when rabbit drops out because noone wants to lead, everybody sprints the last quarter).
Koech, Choge, Alimerew (sp?) and HG should do this in championship races. They do not have the kicks to get past Farah, Lagat, DG or Aguider
I think Rupp will learn from it. That is why it is great that he has the courage to run these races. I wish more of Schumacher's group were out there. Of course, it looks like 3 will run world XC. Plus you need to be in sub 7:40 shape to learn how to race tactically against these guys.

Not sure I've ever seen Rupp do this.

Damn! So a 40 year old man just ran 7:32?!?!?!? Holy crap!
Ya'll think that he is 20 years older than Rupp. Yet, he still smoked him and when he made his move to the front, it looked like little Ruppy was standing still!!! get over it Rupp lovers!

Age cheating? With how he runs and who he is competing against who really gives a rat's ass about his age? If he sets some junior records, who gives a rat's ass about that?
He is competing against the big boys now. Championships and real (non-junior) records are all that count. I really don't care if he is 14, 24 or 41 years old. Who gives a flying fvck?

This.
Since when are junior records a big deal? Maybe H.S. records and such are somewhat important nationally but that has nothing to do with what Gebrhiwet is doing on the big stage.
If Hagos is 40 then what does that say about the 'Great White hype' that is Rupp - getting beat down by a middle aged African?? For all your technology and gadgetry, ultimately there is no substitute for real talent.

Gebrehiwot is no slouch of a kicker... But u r right. Rupp did look great out kicking lagat at the us nationals. But lagat has lost a step. Rupp was not able to out kick mo farah last year ...so his kick is not first class.
I think Alberto uhum Salazar praises his kick too much and he may be relying too much on that... I really thought he would hang on too the surge.. But he got blown up... Wow ... Hagos is the real deal.
Man... only on Letsrun is the standard for "First Class Kicking" dependent on one's ability to outkick the reigning 5k/10k Olympic Champion who won both races in a kick......
Rupp has a fantastic kick. Gebrehiwot is a largely unknown quantity at this point. Yes, he has run 12:47, and yes, he just ran 7:32, beating Rupp. I think the Brojos are jumping on his bandwagon (the successor to Gebreselassie and Bekele, really??) a touch too soon. He has exactly zero senior records or medals to his name. He certainly is a talent, but could easily go the way of Fekele, another young prodigy (12:56 as a 16yr old, if I remember correctly). Fekele has had a decent career but is not anywhere near being a GOAT.

Age doesn't matter when you are competing as a professional doofus.
