Bingo! Or journalism, psychology, sociology, women's studies, African studies, painting, ceramics, apparel merchandising, classics, Victorian literature, PE, health promotions, kinesiology, athletic training, and on and on and on.
You need to study science, math, engineering, healthcare and computers. This is where the decent salaries are.

Government is responsible for enabling people to go to college to major in worthless fields.
Banks would not be willing to lend money to students majoring in useless fields if the government didn't guarantee student loans.
Colleges would not be even be able to fund useless departments if the government didn't subsidize education.
Government created the mess.

Nothing.
Next?
Well in all honesty two of my friends went to college. One graduated with a bachelors in kinesiology and is now in school to become a pt. The other got a degree in computer sceince and makes about $67,000 a year. Of my other three friends who didnt go to college. One went into the army and served a tour in Iraq. Made an average of $50,000 and then came back with a series case of post tramatic stress disorder. For which he has yet to get treatment for. The second currently flips burgers at Mc. Donalds for a living and well the last one has yet to even move out of his parents house. So in my opinion college is the best choice as long as its for the right major.

Interestingly, you would be surprised with how much money is in the precision ceramics and ceramic engineering industry...
Those college grads have it pretty tough. 1/25 of them are unemployed.
Is the "government" a person, or an entity with personal qualities?

Yes. Like a corporation, the government is an entity with certain elements of personhood. It can't think or hold opinions or desires of its own, but it can act in certain ways, like a machine. "Society," in contrast consists only of individual members and therefore cannot say or do anything.
I may go back to the 1960s (education-wise) but I never would have thought about borrowing money to go to college. I worked every summer & for two years throughout the school year.
I worked for my meals at the dorm cafeteria to cover my room & board.
I graduated with a B. S. degree & no debt. It took me 5.5 years & I had to keep the Draft Board off my back so I could complete college or be drafted into the Army & sent to Vietnam. I got out of college & spent 6 years in the US Army Reserves. I never complained (even having to take 2 years ROTC in college).
I guess I didn't have the mindset of those today.
I paid for MY OWN education.
I was proud of my daughter; community college 1st 2 yrs; lived @ home; then went to big Univ for 3 years; worked during college ... graduated in 5 yrs total.
I paid most of her tuition & rent, etc but she wanted to work & pay as much as possible.
When she graduated, I told to give me her credit car bill & I paid it off after buying her a new car. She worked hard.
She valued her education before she put herself all out to earn it .... not so with so many today.
Now Obummer is floating legislation to write off their debt .... What a country... Welcome to the 3rd world.
Welcome to Yosemite National Park, brought to you by The People's Republic of China.
Yeah man! Obama's the worst! He's like...what are they...oh yeah, a communist! Gosh he is just taking this country to heck! Welcome to the end of America...right!?!?!?
So governments can't think, nor hold opinions or desires of their own. What do you think of the OP's statement, when he credited the government with "thinking":

Thanks, government, for thinking that a college education would be the great equalizer in society.
Seems like he wants to blame the government for what society thinks.
Society is a collection of people. Messages can come from all collections of people. Messages can also come from books, billboards, TV, etc. These are not people either.

hmmmmmmmm I'm getting the impression you have no clue about the average American college grad today and just want to sprout your pre conceived notions of the current generation being sooooo very lazy even though the statistics for volunteerism completely refute that.. The current generation is just not as greedy and self serving as your generation that is all.
I would just like to point out that 99% of our current economic debt problems are because of your generation...
I hope you are happy with being so lazy that you are forcing your children to live a lower standard of living than yourself because you are to lazy to take responsibility for the debt you and your generation created.
Heaven forbid you pay a little more in taxes than your parents had to. Or for god sack hold the politicians of your generation accountable for robbing the next generation. But we know you want do that because you EARNED (?) EVERYTHING YOU WORKED FOR RIGHT? Screw your children...they are lazy free loaders. They should pay for all your debts... RIGHT???????????????????????
3....2...1... you attempting to deny that any of the current debt problems are your generations problems.....I hope you can sleep at night as your children suffer for your laziness and selfishness. Just admit it you and your generation are lazy free loaders.
55k is more than most recent college grads are making. That was my point.
That may be true, but in the long run, I'll be the people with college degrees will be making more money. It may take the college grads a bit of time to get a job and work their way up to making a lot of money but they'll have a MUCH easier time of making over $55K/year. Most people without a college degree would probably be maxing out at $55K
