Here is an even simpler explanation. A short-legged runner must push harder to achieve the same stride length as a long-legged runner, because he must project his body farther through the air.

No he doesn't. If they weigh the same, then they will have the same stride length for the same force. This is like physics 101. F=ma. Nowhere in that equation does it ask for the size of the object.
