Herbster accepted the coaching position at Cincinnati early this week after the position was offered. Background check was run and he was already emailing with the athletes on the team to touch base and introduce himself. It wasn't that he had the offers to both Texas and Cincinnati at the same time and chose Texas--HE ALREADY HAD THE JOB AT CINCINNATI AND QUIT 24 HOURS AFTER IT WAS MADE PUBLIC.
The transience of college coaches can be sickening.
He did us dirty.
Seriously...can you blame the guy? I'm sure he had every intention of going to Cincinnati otherwise he wouldn't have emailed the athletes. But if you were in the same position and Texas called up, what would you do? I know I would take Texas, too. I'm assuming it pays significantly more and you can recruit to a school with tons of brand recognition. People have to do what's right for their families first and I don't think you should criticize someone for making those decisions.
Gibby stays on as head xc/asst. t&f...clayton is head t&f coach, not director
Nothing wrong with looking for a salary. People have families, kids.
You can criticize a coach for passing up on an underpaid offer to get one that's better, but it's smart. It's job hunting.

If true, does he keep Gibby?
Better question would be does he keep Mo?
Former Bengal Hillary Merkley joins ISU track and field coaching staff
Until colleges pay coaches liveable wages, the stepping stones to the top will always have revolving doors. The majority of coaches want stability and want a program to be loyal to. But when your paid terribly, and treated worse, its hard not to look for the bigger better deal. Life's to short to be paid and treated like crap your whole career. Now as far as what happens to the kids careers? Its sucks but that's life. The large majority of kids wont make a career in track and field, which means in the grand scheme of things, good coach, bad coach, year without a coach, most kids remain willfully unaffected by what a coach tries to accomplish or doesnt accomplish.
Any word on LSU distance?
Surprised Jerry went for that arrangement.
He is going to hate how Gibby doesn't like to race nor get distance runners ready for conference track meets. Will Jerry allow him to continue to have 6 scholarships in distance?
Who can confirm Jerry to Michigan? Don't see anything anywhere about it....
as of thursday. press release monday.
This is false.... Jerry not leaving auburn

Makes more as an assistant at Auburn.
Which position is open and why?
So will Pete Herber (Jumps/Multis) and Nate Wiens (Sprints) follow Ihmels to Idaho State since Martin Smith has brought nearly his entire staff with him to Iowa State?

Boise State is in Boise. Idaho State is in Pocatello. The University of Idaho is in Moscow. The state schools are two different universities.
Tyson Gay tests positive. I know this is about coaching openings but this is big news. Just wanted to post this...don't mean to throw this group off course.

So, will these guys follow Ihmels to Moscow or not?
Pete Watson to Oregon. You heard it here first.
Somebody please throw this group off a cliff errr course.
Unfortunately, there is a lot of coaching movement due to many factors but it's just evidence of the incresed number of people considering coaching track as a career option over the past 25 years. How many old crumudgeons are hanging on these days? It's a niche sport in the US and will never gain the value in the public mind to bring the salaries to any level near fb or bb. Agree that many are just looking for a higher paycheck but that also will come with the demand for results like the other sports. The game is just evolving as the others have but again, sport is just entertainment and track will never reach the frenzy of the ball games in the US because people aren't willing to fill the stands and support it. There's simply not enough of a team concept to drive that interest in addition to the fact that it's a non-contact sport and the damned meets last way too long.
Greatest contract gaff of the year so far goes to Steve Alford from New Mexico to UCLA. I can tell you he isn't worth a nickel either but just look at what others value. So the guy you are talking about doing the switchy-changy from Cincy to Texas is a small example of what happens every day in other sports. Better hope Cincinnati contract writers double checked their work.
