Williams ran 17:42 which is 5:42 pace after running the first qorter at 4:25 pace. Gee ya think that 'gutsy' start cost her? Well she's just a sophmore so she does have a couple yares to get her head otta her bum bum.

I think it might be safe to safe that the top two guys in the nation ended up at footlocker this year while the top two girls ended up at NXN. footlocker will not be dieing any time soon as some LRC posters indicate. Sam wharton was not top in his region, tough but not the best XC runner this year
You do realize that he was not top in his region by about an inch, he broke 15 min. in that race. Get a clue clown.
She was the sacrificial lamb.

Well she helped sacrifice everyone who was within a few seconds of her after that commikazy start! Why da ya think the winning time was so pathetic? I bet if the race had gone out 10 seconds slower for the openinng 400, at least one girl would have broke 17 minutes. Well, maybe. But at any rate the splits were, I believe, for the leaders
5:18
5:52 (11:10)
6:15 for last 1.1 = about 5:39 pace
Pretty goofie really. I know the 2nd, 3rd miles contain a steep hill but never the less.

No need for nasty posting, I just am saying he was not top from his region in the race that mattered, the final. Now, granted, maybe he wore himself out in the mud a week earlier, but he knew he was going to be racing cheserek. Now, on to the season that really matters, outdoor track. Who knows maybe we'll see Wharton run an 8:40 two mile or 4:00 mile, more power to him
The word you're looking for is "kamikaze".

At least he showed some class and didn't throw up gang signals like those other little thugs!
He did go along with the airplane bit, but I was glad to see that he didn't do the gang signs.
What were those gang signs all about, anyway? Did they actually mean something? They looked ridiculous, especially without the accompanying backward baseball cap, baggy pants, boom box, and shades.
Jeez Laweez, the Northeast managed to score 81 points despite having the race winner. 2nd thru 5th = average place of 21 in a field of 39. And 4 of the last 8 finishers. I wonder if they were expected to perform so porly or it was an aberration?
Kind of renders the gangy signs even more stupid if you ask me

Well not really he was close except for the boom box part, repalce that with constantly ringing cell phone with a ringtone of Snoopy the Dog and the hip hop motif is correct even today..

To add to that since november 3rd, Sam Wharton won the Ohio High school state championship, got 2nd at the NXN regional, got 2nd at the Footlocker regional, WON the NXN National meet, and got 6th at the Footlocker national meet.
THAT IS A PRETTY FREAKING INCREDIBLE MONTH!!!!

Yes, I was wondering if someone would call me out for the dated reference to a boom box. But the point, of course, is that the whole act is dated, and simply looks ridiculous when performed, apparently without ironic intent, by skinny white kids in cross-country outfits.
But back to my question: Did the signs that were "flashed" have any particular meaning?
Just yanking your chain. But if I remember right, this is a tradition. At least, I'm pretty sure the Northeast has done this more than once.
The hand signs that a number of the runners used were designed to designate their teams...S, NE, MW or W...they were doing the same thing last year. Not exactly sure when it started, but it's an interesting way of repping your team (region) at the national meet.
I heard that there were camera problems on the hill, which was as frustrating for those who were present, as for those who were streaming, but it shouldn't take away from the event. Both races were phenomenal, and the best really did earn their spots as champions and All-Americans today. Footlocker is alive and well, lives up to its reputation as putting on a 1st class event. I've gone to both NXN and FL (multiple times), and without opening up a can of worms, FL definitely does everything in their power to make sure their event is top-notch.
Congrats to Cheserek, Rohrer, and all the runners today for their phenomenal performances.
I don't get the whole hand signal thing the kids love to do these days. Where did that originate?
The only approprate hand signal that get's a pass is the classic "number one" for the winner of the race. After he crosses the finish line and not during the pre-race introductions.

There's nothing gutsy about Williams going out in 66.

Of course there is. Maybe not smart, but clearly gutsy.

Any special reason for the "maybe" in there? Maybe it's because you realize that maybe stupidity and guts maybe don't mean the same thing in running?
I maybe doubt that Williams had any idea she's maybe hit 66 at the 400. Maybe she planned to go out hard, but I may sincerely doubt she intended to run half of her 800-meter PR.

Not at all. It takes more guts to believe in your training and pacing to run your own race and reel in the dumb@sses. Any clown can run like a bat out of hell the first quarter - there's nothing gutsy about it.
