True - but Hopkins could've just eaten the bear, raw; he's got those Hannibal skills to back him up.

Bears are very insecure about their sexuality. If you get in a fight with a bear, just imply that the bear is a homosexual and he will back off.

Not a grizzly.
Not a person defending themselves against an attacking bear.

Alaskan bear expert (this may sound mocking, buts its not, my question is legit):
People have said that polar bears are the only mammals that actively hunt humans. What is your opinion on said statement?

I guide bear viewing/photography trips in Alaska, and backpack/raft/kayak/ski/climb in bear country all summer long.
Oh, now you're some kind of expert, but you're demanding proof from me? Let's see your credentials. You post some links.
If Americans don't defend themselves with bear spears, it's because they don't carry them. That should be obvious to anyone less stupid than you, in particular Nordic people who have a long tradition of spear-hunting bears. If you don't have a high-caliber rifle, a spear is the next best thing. Not an annoying can of pepper.

Lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, cougars, wolves, coyotes, dholes, dingos, hyenas, brown bears (aka grizzlies), leopard seals, and vampire bats have all been known to track down humans for the sake of dining on human flesh and/or blood.

Well, I'd not claim to be an "expert" - but I have considerable experience around bears & traveling thru bear country.
I wouldn't say polar bears actively hunt people. Polar bears spend the vast majority of their lives on the ice cap, far from people. But, on land, predatory attacks seem to be far more common (relatively) than other bears.
Bears have never bee documented to become "maneaters" - where the taste of humans seems to turn a bear into a predator of humans .. whereas may of the big cats, for example, definitely have.

No, I'm not an "expert", but I have plenty of experience dealing with bears, especially grizzlies. Do you?
In other words, you don't have any links?
Google Stephen Herrera or USGS studies for published reports on bear spray.

Which is not at all what you said earlier, is it?
fwiw, hunting bears and defending one's self from a bear attack are 2 very, very different things. No, I wouldn't suggest pepper spray as the best tool to go hunting bears.

Once again - prove it. Show your credentials before you go asking for mine.
I'll go ahead and call you a liar, since you obviously have no credentials.
Several mentions of bear spray, but curiously none of spears. Maybe you should contact the NPS and let them know the error of their ways. I'll check the site next month and see if they've updated it based upon your pro tip.
Hey that's witty, but I already mentioned spears are cumbersome which is why most people don't use them... change your name and try again.

Sure - you can call me whatever you want. How, exactly, do you want me to "prove" who I am? I could give you my 2 websites, but you'd just say that's not really me - as my real name is not wtfunny.
If you can show me some support for your claims about spears, feel free to do so.
Wigins,
Where did you get your bear info from? It's all wrong.
Playing dead with a Grizz is the way to go...fighting just results in your immediate death or severe maiming. You will lose limbs quickly. Grizz get up to 1500 pounds. Would you like a new face through reconstructive surgery or quick death?
Bears stand up on their hind legs because they are curious and are seeing and smelling whatever it is they are curious about.
I live in BC, we have heavy populations of bears. We also have heavy populations of cougars, now they are different. Likely you wont know you are being stalked, they will attack smaller animals for convenience, take your Shitzu for a walk. We have cougars come right into the city...they are more freaky to deal with. Those guys you have to fight....they only get up to 200 pounds, but they are very fast and powerful.
This is just silly. Everyone should know that a spear is what it takes to neutralize a grizzly. Given that you're reasonably fit of course. Children a small ladies may spray and pray, but anyone else is better off with a spear with a sharp solid blade.
They look pretty fit, but their build looks more like distance runners (except for the cut on the left, he's a little more built).
I would guess in the 13-14 second range if they all have to stay together. A little faster individually.

my dad backed up and banged a pot. the bear ran away. maybe he got lucky.
