While running? Won't you end up with crusty shorts? What do you do for long runs?

Wearing underwear (briefs or trunks) under half tights or shorts helps. A foreskin also helps. at some point you should forget about the shorts until spring.
For those who are circumsized, is there a place to purchase foreskins?

This sounds weird, but it is a trick my old coach tought me, and I'll never forget it.
On really cold days (under 15 degrees farenheit), I usually plan ahead. Go to the grocery store, and yes I know they're out of season in the Winter, but pick up a cucumber that's slightly larger than your dork.
Next, here's the important part, you need to carve out the inside of the cucumber (I actually have a cucumber scraper). Be VERY careful not to puncture or otherwise rip the skin. Cucumber skin is warm, windproof and naturally wicking. Pop that on and you'll be warm as a bun in the oven!
One cucumber will usually last a month or so if you treat it with linseed oil. Happy running!
The BEST response by far!

This
I have also used this technique for years and it works the best by far
Make sure and rub it for while afterwards to get the blood flowing and get it warmed up. Gotta avoid frostbite.
i don't
Craft wind briefs. My coldest run in them is -44F with no extremity damage.
Interesting -- that's definitely not what I've experienced. I live in Canada, and have regularly run (with my training partners) in -20 to -30 C temperatures. I actually don't find much difference between -10 and -20, assuming you're dressed appropriately. Once you're below -20 C, you really need to make sure you don't have exposed skin (along with a sock down the pants, of course). But in terms of the inhaled air being too cold, I've never had any trouble with that. The actual issue with inhaling cold air is dryness -- cold dry air has the same likelihood of triggering airway irritation as warm dry air. If you breathe through a balaclava, scarf, or heat-exchange mask, then your exhaled air moistens the incoming air, which reduces any issues. It may simply be that you have exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, which is why you're more sensitive to the temperature (and moisture) changes.
plastic baggie. bag 'em.
BJ at mile points
I live in Canada and typically wear shorts until it gets into the low 30s fahrenheit (roughly 0 celcius, but I'll go as low as -5 if it's mild and not much wind). I have never had this problem you describe and have now been running for around 20 years. Have you tried wearing clothing? That's always worked for me.
Move to California where "cold" is a 50 degree morning.

Lately it's been fairly cold here (high 30s). I still like to wear my shorts when it's this temperature, but at about mile 3 or 4, I start to feel my penis becoming an icicle. It's not excruciating pain, but it doesn't feel good and interferes with my focus/run. It also makes it stiffer, so I start chaffing a little.
What are some reasonable solutions? Stuffing a sock down there seems awkward and ridiculous.
Wtf do you wear shorts for in that cold weather?! Scandinavian here, and I've registered that both brits and americans do this.
Cam levins did his goal pace intervals on track during the cold winter in short tights.
Why???
Don't you guys get cold? Don't you guys know that your muscles works better when warm?
It absolutely baffles me how some nations just love to dress poorly in the cold. So strange.
much tougher than you wrote:
1. For not-really-cold weather like you're talking about, just wear any pair of briefs under your shorts or tights. This simple extra layer alone buys you a lot of comfort.

Are you joking? Don't these guys were briefs under shorts or tights during winter? Wtf...
Are you joking? There is no bigger loser move than wearing underwear under tights. Or lined running shorts for that matter.

Double briefs or get the wind blocking underwear. Or tights.
Did you know that smart wool makes a wind brief? http://amzn.to/17Bb2gn I had a roommate that needed them and always sang their praises. It wasn't until I moved to Wisconsin after college that I got them and my runs have been comfy and dicksicle free since!
